About the Role:

The Senior Opto-Mechanical Technician supports the maintenance, service, and mechanical development of IMAX film camera systems, optics, and accessories. This hands-on role combines precision mechanical work, assembly, and system testing of IMAX’s world-class film camera systems. The position operates at an intermediate or senior level, working closely with experts in the Camera Department and collaborating with the Design Engineering Team as required.

This role work focuses on devising, fabricating, installing, calibrating, testing, and repairing mechanical equipment and systems involving the movement of physical components including:

  • Assisting with developing technical solutions related to quality, operation and performance.

  • Installing, calibrating, repairing, and upgrading components.

  • Devising, fabricating, and assembling new or modified mechanical components for machinery and equipment

  • Conducting quality assurance/control tests and procedures

  • Lead mechanical service, maintenance, and upgrades across all IMAX film camera platforms, optical systems, and accessories.

  • Develop and implement technical processes for camera assembly, repair, and testing to ensure consistent standards and documentation.

  • Establish and manage preventive maintenance schedules for each camera system based on operational history and usage metrics.

  • Provide day-to-day oversight of mechanical projects, including CAD reviews, prototype builds, and component modifications.

  • Perform precision assembly, alignment, and calibration of camera subsystems with extremely tight mechanical tolerances.

  • Mentor and guide others in machining and fabrication tasks, including lathing, milling, drilling, and grinding for fine components.

  • Collaborate with Engineering and Optical Design Teams to validate designs, improve manufacturability, and reduce rework.

  • Maintain detailed documentation and traceability for service activities, mechanical upgrades, and component lifecycle tracking.

  • Conduct system-level testing and troubleshooting to verify mechanical and optical performance.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior technicians, promoting craftsmanship, safety, and continuous improvement.

  • Support field deployments and emergency service needs, including occasional on-site travel.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Ultra-high precision tolerances: Maintaining sub-thousandth-inch accuracy critical to film steadiness and system reliability.

  • Opto-mechanical alignment sensitivity: Aligning mechanical and optical components to exacting standards for image quality and synchronization.

  • Legacy and custom-built systems: Servicing rare or discontinued IMAX camera systems requiring reverse engineering and creative problem-solving.

  • Cross-disciplinary integration: Ensuring proper interfacing between mechanical, optical, and electronic subsystems.

  • Machining and fabrication: Producing or modifying precision parts in-house to demanding accuracy and finish requirements.

Project Management Responsibilities

  • Predictive maintenance development: Building data-driven service intervals for mechanical reliability.

  • Service tracking and documentation: Maintaining comprehensive records for performance, traceability and auditability.

  • Field service unpredictability: Handling urgent service or calibration in remote or constrained conditions.

  • Time-critical precision work: Delivering flawless assembly and adjustment under production deadlines.

  • Supply chain challenges: Sourcing or fabricating discontinued or specialized components as needed.

  • Selects and executes appropriate service or repair methods for camera systems.

  • Determines machining tools, materials, and fabrication processes for precision parts.

  • Makes judgment calls during assembly and calibration to ensure alignment accuracy.

  • Prioritizes daily maintenance and project workflow to meet production timelines.

  • Implements minor mechanical adjustments or fit-ups not affecting system interfaces.

  • Leads initial troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of opto-mechanical issues.

  • Manages fixture design, tooling, and testing setups to support service operations.

  • Upholds safety, cleanliness, and quality standards in all shop and lab work.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Approving design changes or re-engineering affecting system functionality or tolerances.

  • Selecting new materials or manufacturing methods with potential performance impacts.

  • Defining or authorizing major upgrades, rebuilds, or system retrofits.

  • Approving capital equipment purchases or external vendor engagements.

  • Scheduling or authorizing field services or emergency deployments affecting production timelines.

  • Establishing long-term maintenance intervals and reliability metrics.

  • Modifying safety procedures or workshop policies requiring management sign-off.

  • Approving resource allocations or staffing changes beyond daily workshop scope.

What we’re looking for:

  • Extensive experience with mechanical film systems or precision electromechanical assemblies.

  • Expertise in mechanical service, assembly, and alignment of high-tolerance mechanisms.

  • Strong hands-on skills in machining and fabrication (lathe, mill, drill press, grinding, fine fitting).

  • Proficiency in interpreting CAD models, mechanical drawings, and engineering documentation.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and process improvement capabilities.

  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills with high attention to detail.

  • Must be able to work on-site, remote work not applicable.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally (<10%) for field support.

  • Experience with thermal design considerations (heat transfer, airflow) is a strong asset.
