The Interim Director of Benefits (12 months) is responsible for leading and maintaining 1Password’s global benefits function during a 12-month period. This role ensures the continuity of benefits programs while providing strategic oversight and operational stability. As Interim Director, you will drive the development and administration of competitive, scalable, and compliant benefits strategies to support employee well-being and the company's growth and talent retention goals.
You will collaborate closely with HR, finance, and leadership teams to provide guidance on benefits, leaves, and accommodations while overseeing vendor relationships and compliance with applicable regulations. Your leadership will help ensure our programs are both employee-focused and aligned with broader organizational objectives
This is a remote opportunity within Canada or the United States.
What we're looking for:
- 8+ years of experience managing benefits programs, with 5+ years in a global benefits role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field; advanced certifications (e.g., CEBS, PHR, SPHR) are a plus.
- In-depth knowledge of global benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and compliance with local regulations.
- Familiarity with global benefits programs and cultural adaptations.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to analyze data and make informed recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage employees, leadership, and external partners.
- Proven leadership abilities, including managing cross-functional teams and multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Bonus: if you bring experience managing total rewards programs, including compensation.
What you can expect:
- Lead the development and management of our global. benefits strategy, including health, wellness, retirement, and voluntary benefits programs.
- Oversee leave and accommodation programs, ensuring compliance with U.S. laws such as FMLA, ADA, and state-specific regulations.
- Oversee relationships with benefits vendors, including negotiation and contract management, ensuring high service levels.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Analyze program costs and utilization trends, recommending optimizations to maintain value and employee satisfaction.
- Develop communication strategies to educate employees about benefits, leaves, accommodations, and wellness programs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of programs using employee feedback and market data to drive continuous improvements.
- Collaborate with HR, legal, and finance teams to integrate benefits and leave policies with total rewards initiatives.
- Provide benefits expertise during mergers, acquisitions, and corporate transitions to ensure seamless integration.
USA-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $185,000 USD and $251,000 USD.
Canada-based roles only: The annual base salary for this role is between $167,000 CAD and $227,000 CAD.
We believe in the power of remote work, but we also recognize that in-person connection is sometimes important to help us achieve our mission. While we are a remote-first company, occasional travel for in-person engagement will be a part of this role. Frequency will depend on role and responsibilities, and may include, but is not limited to, annual department-wide offsites, team meetings, and customer/industry events. These events will typically be held in varying locations across Canada and the US.
