Over 150,000 businesses and millions of people log in to 1Password to unlock smart, simple access to everything they care about. Our vision is to create a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, and our culture values simplicity, honesty and a human-centric approach to solving problems. Come help us unlock peace of mind so everyone can stay safer online.
We are excited to welcome a Staff Rails Developer to join our growing Kolide team here at 1Password, whose focus is endpoint security and user-friendly solutions that help to communicate security issues in simple, accessible, and effective ways for everyday users.
As a Staff Rails Developer, you will play a pivotal role in defining our technical roadmap, leading major architectural decisions, and fostering a culture of technical excellence within and beyond your team. Your expertise in endpoint security will help us continue to enhance our platform with a focus on visibility into device security and empowering users to maintain a secure digital environment. Your work will extend far beyond implementation, as you’ll shape the foundation of 1Password’s Rails engineering practices. Collaborating in our remote-first environment, you’ll have the autonomy to lead impactful projects while mentoring and inspiring engineers across the organization. In this critical role, you’ll work on a key product that’s central to 1Password’s vision of a safer, simpler digital future for everyone, with the opportunity to make an impact at both the product and company-wide level.
This is a remote opportunity within Canada and the US. You will be expected to be fully remote, with periodic travel to meet up with your team and leaders for on-sites.
What we're looking for:
- 7+ years of experience building and scaling complex SaaS platforms with Ruby on Rails, with a proven track record of leading technical initiatives and delivering impactful results.
- Deep expertise in database architecture and optimization, with the ability to design and implement scalable data solutions that meet the demands of a growing global user base.
- Expertise with modern Rails front-end tech, including Stimulus and Turbo.
- A strong communicator, who can convey technical details clearly, both in documentation and when interacting with customers or less technical colleagues.
- Experience building and scaling applications, particularly with a focus on performance and reliability. You understand how to diagnose bottlenecks and resolve scalability challenges.
- Drive projects to successful completion, ensuring they meet quality standards, deadlines, and deliverables through hands-on leadership and building strong relationships across partners throughout the company.
- Lead and support senior engineers through solving some of the hardest problems at 1Password. Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
- Focus on customer needs to push the boundaries of user experience that 1Password has become known for.
- An advocate for modern Rails practices and a thought leader in the ecosystem, contributing to open-source projects, speaking at conferences, or publishing insights that advance the field.
- A background in security or IT is beneficial, and you enjoy simplifying complex technical concepts for end-users
- Experience working in a remote-first company or distributed teams is a plus.
Bonus points for:
What you can expect:
- Own the design and implementation of core systems, influencing project success and course correcting as necessary, to ensure scalability and alignment with 1Password’s broader technical goals.
- Drive the development of APIs, authentication systems, and customer-facing UI, ensuring seamless integration with other 1Password services.
- Implement enhancements using modern Rails features like Hotwire, Stimulus, and Turbo to improve the reactivity of our web applications.
- Solve complex technical problems both directly and through others. Serve as a technical leader and mentor across the organization, setting engineering best practices, guiding architectural decisions, and fostering a culture of innovation.
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, influencing decisions that impact company-wide initiatives and unify our approach to security, performance, and user experience.
- Collaborate with product, design, and security leaders on cross-functional projects and help to shape 1Password’s technical direction, bridging teams and ensuring alignment between user needs and engineering solutions.
- Participate in code reviews, offering constructive feedback, and helping teammates adhere to best practices.
- Rotate through "on-call" responsibilities to help review PRs, assist other engineers, and provide technical support to other departments such as Customer Success and Sales.
- A remote-first environment with a focus on asynchronous collaboration, and a supportive, passionate, and collaborative team.
- A culture of innovation and technical leadership, where you’ll have the opportunity to mentor developers, influence 1Password’s engineering direction, and leave a lasting impact on the future of digital security
