Your career is an investment that grows over time!
Wealthsimple is on a mission to help everyone achieve financial freedom by reimagining what it means to manage your money. Using smart technology, we take financial services that are often confusing, opaque and expensive and make them transparent and low-cost for everyone. We’re the largest fintech company in Canada, with over 3+ million users who trust us with more than $100 billion in assets.
Our teams ship often and make an impact with groundbreaking ideas. We're looking for talented people who keep it simple and value collaboration and humility as we continue to create inclusive and high-performing teams where people can be inspired to do their best work.
The Edge team sits at the intersection of Wealthsimple's backend ecosystem and our client applications. We own the GraphQL gateway and the public API, along with the tooling, patterns, and best practices that help all our product developers ship features quickly and reliably. Reporting to a Senior Manager of Software Development, you'll work alongside developers and cross-functional partners to shape our APIs and how data flows through our systems. This year, we're leading Wealthsimple's migration from schema stitching to GraphQL Federation—a foundational shift that will make our gateway faster, more predictable, and essentially maintenance-free.
We're looking for a Staff Software Developer who can guide complex technical initiatives across the finish line while making other developers more effective. You'll help us implement our big project this year, GraphQL Federation architecture. We need someone who can lead delivery, partnering with teams across the company to migrate dozens of services to a federated model. You'll balance hands-on coding with technical leadership, unblocking teams, refining our approach as we learn, and ensuring we ship a gateway that product teams never have to think about.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • Lead the delivery of our GraphQL Federation migration, moving services from schema stitching to a fully federated supergraph
  • Work with GraphQL Mesh and Hive Gateway to enable and operate the federated architecture
  • Build automation tooling, including AI-assisted migration scripts, to support and accelerate the transition
  • Partner closely with backend teams to evolve and transform their GraphQL schemas
  • Continuously iterate on the migration approach based on learnings and feedback
  • Improve gateway performance and observability
  • Contribute to shared GraphQL libraries used across the organization
  • Enable product teams to adopt GraphQL patterns without requiring deep GraphQL expertise
  • Mentor developers across the organization on GraphQL best practices
  • Create and maintain documentation that scales the team’s impact

What you’ll bring

  • Deep experience with GraphQL at scale, including federation, schema design, and performance optimization; able to navigate tradeoffs between composition strategies and guide teams through complex migrations
  • Strong fluency in API design patterns across REST and GraphQL, with the ability to advise on how internal and external APIs should evolve, which standards to adopt, and when to intentionally diverge
  • Proven track record of delivering large, cross-team technical initiatives, coordinating migrations, unblocking dependencies, and maintaining momentum across services
  • Solid software engineering fundamentals, with experience building, monitoring, and operating high-traffic production systems
  • Experience with Ruby and operating Node.js services is a plus
  • Ability to influence without authority, bringing developers along through clear communication, strong documentation, and genuine collaboration rather than mandates
  • A pragmatic decision-maker who knows when to push for the ideal solution and when a “good enough” approach delivers impact faster and enables learning
