About the Role
We’re looking for a Director of Communications to lead the communications function at Wealthsimple by managing a team of specialists, while providing strategic guidance and tactical execution on various needs across the company — from client-facing communications to media relations and crisis management. The key responsibility of this role is to further a positive narrative and reputation for the company, brand and products. This role will be coverage for a parental leave until September 2024. Come September 2024, this role will continue to lead significant aspects of the external communications function at Wealthsimple as we build out new areas and continue to grow. Long-term, the role will report to the Head of Communications and Public affairs.
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to:
- Partner closely with our Head of GR to support and coach a small but mighty communications and public affairs team, including leads who manage internal communications and external PR. Our team embodies a “one team” mentality. In practice, that means leaning into roles and responsibilities outside of your scope to support team members
- Advise leaders across the company on communications strategy, and represent the communications team at the executive level
- Identify proactive opportunities to strengthen Wealthsimple’s corporate narrative, including building out and supporting Wealthsimple’s ESG/CSR strategy
- Provide strategic crisis management on sensitive issues
- Work collaboratively across teams within leadership, marketing, client success, investment research, product, and more to drive business goals
We are looking for someone who:
- Brings 10+ years of experience in a communications role coupled with experience leading and building teams
- Brings experience in issues management, corporate and/or product communications, media relations, financial services and/or other regulated industries, ideally at a growth-stage company
- Has strong interpersonal skills - capable of building trusted relationships across the organization, at speed
- Is comfortable in a fast-paced, high-growth, complex and regulated environment
- Is data-driven, and understands how to measure their work, and connect it to broader business/company goals
- Is a compelling storyteller, writer, and presenter who sees the angle within the noise and delivers messages flawlessly across many mediums
- A strong owner and builder who finds creative solutions to solving challenges and making things happen
- Brings an understanding of Canadian media and PR landscape and is a natural connector who brings a strong network of contacts
