Support Technician / Engineer
Voyis
About Voyis:
Voyis designs and manufactures high-performance underwater optical sensors (lasers, cameras, lights) for underwater vehicles that expand capability and enhance understanding in underwater surveys and exploration. Our products have enabled our customers to survey more than 10,000km of ocean floor across all 7 continents, helping people better understand those remote, challenging environments. Our mission is to push the limits of what’s possible subsea and enable every underwater vehicle to see the depths like we see the surface.
All our products are proudly designed and built in Waterloo. Voyis operates independently and is part of the Covelya Group of companies.
What you’ll do:
As a Support Technician/Engineer at Voyis you’ll be the face of our products with customers, leading live and onsite training, supporting integrations, and turning raw optical data into high-quality 3D deliverables. This multifaceted role is ideal for someone who enjoys presenting, travelling, and digging into technical workflows. You’ll start by learning Voyis camera systems and software in depth, then quickly move into delivering customer training, providing on-site support, and guiding customers through data processing best practices.
You will run training sessions (virtual and in-person), answer questions on the fly, and adapt content to the audience. You’ll also support customer projects by processing imagery into 3D outputs and documenting steps and results. While you’ll help triage support tickets in downtime, the emphasis of this role is proactive training, onsite customer support, and project-oriented data processing - not a traditional help-desk position.
You’ll collaborate closely with Engineering and Product, bringing the “voice of the customer” back to Voyis to improve usability, workflows, and performance. Expect to learn constantly, work with leading subsea robotics teams, and build expertise in underwater vision technology across science, offshore energy, and emerging ocean industries.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Lead customer training (virtual and onsite) on system setup, operation, data workflows, and best practices—confidently presenting and fielding questions.
- Travel to customer sites globally for training, commissioning, and project support; represent Voyis professionally as the onsite lead.
- Process customer datasets into usable outputs (e.g., 3D models, point clouds) and create clear, repeatable workflows and basic reports.
- Plan your piece of each project: organize data hand-offs, track dates, and communicate status/risks to stakeholders.
- Triage and manage support requests while at the office - clarify issues, collaborate with internal teams, and ensure timely, professional responses.
- Capture and relay post-delivery insights and feature requests that inform the product roadmap.
Travel & work conditions
- Expect ~1 trip per month (typically 1–2 weeks each)
- Offshore vessel deployments up to 3 per year for ~1-2 weeks each
- Requires a training course and passing a medical exam; Voyis will support certification
- This is an in-person role at our Waterloo HQ.
Skills you will bring to the table:
- Proven ability to present and train live audiences; confident, clear communicator (written and verbal).
- Willingness and enthusiasm to travel for extended periods, including offshore deployments.
- Aptitude for data processing; comfortable spending focused time at a workstation to turn results and document outcomes.
- Project-minded: organized with updates, dates, and basic reporting.
- A natural problem-solver with a hands-on curiosity and excitement to learn how our products work.
- Collaborative and customer-focused; builds strong relationships and serves as a customer bridge.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a technical field covering mechanical, electrical, and software systems.
- 1+ years’ experience in Technical Support, Surveying, or Data Processing
- Ability to obtain (or already hold) offshore survival certification
Bonus Points for:
- Experience delivering technical training or workshops to customers.
- Familiarity with subsea survey/exploration or marine operations.
- Hands-on data processing (photo processing, photogrammetry, point clouds)
- Exposure to software scripting/programming for workflow automation.
- Knowledge of optical systems: cameras, lighting, laser scanners
- Passion for photography or imaging.
- Experience piloting observation-class ROVs.
The Perks:
- Flexible work hours, plenty of vacation, and a dedication to a work-life balance
- Employee-directed personal education funds to drive continuous learning
- Profit-sharing within to celebrate our successes together
- Regular company-wide social events (even remotely!)
- RRSP Matching, Health and vision benefits
