We’re looking for a talented UX/UI Developer to join the Resilience in Action project team. In this role, you’ll help bring the Vesta Community platform to life, ensuring it is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and accessible to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV)—particularly immigrant, refugee, and non-status women. With a focus on usability and empathy, you’ll design tools that truly make a difference.

What You’ll Be Doing

UX/UI Design and Development:

  • Plan and run user research (in person and virtual) to learn about survivors’ and partners’ needs, challenges, and goals, as well as synthesize the results.
  • Design user experiences and user interfaces for the Vesta Community platform with responsive design to handle iOS and Android mobile devices
  • Design and document user experiences with a focus on overall flow and execution that resonate with survivors and community partners and align with our brand.
  • Plan and run user testing sessions (in person and virtual) with survivors and community organizations to gather feedback on usability, design, and functionality.
  • Sketch, wireframe, and prototype to quickly develop assets to support iterative development and for user testing.
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code.
  • Optimize the platform for performance and usability across devices, including mobile and desktop.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the fractional development team, web & graphic designer, back end developer, and academic partners to integrate front-end components with secure and ethical data processing systems.
  • Collaborate with the project team to translate survivor feedback, research insights, and stakeholder input into intuitive and effective user flows and interfaces.
  • Collaborate with partners on privacy-preserving features and secure data handling.
  • Participate in user testing sessions with survivors and community organizations to gather feedback on usability, design, and functionality.
  • Incorporate feedback from survivor focus groups and user testing to refine features and designs.
  • Work closely with web & graphic designer to create a seamless flow between the website and platform.

Optimization & Maintenance

  • Optimize the platform’s performance for mobile and desktop devices, ensuring a fast and smooth user experience.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve front-end issues as they arise.
  • Continuously improve and iterate on the platform’s design and functionality to meet evolving user needs.

Experience & Education:

  • 3+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with front end development experience.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Web Development, UX/UI Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Must be currently eligible to work in Canada
  • International experience and/or designing and developing in multiple languages are assets.
  • Successful candidates will be required to complete a successful background check prior to commencing employment which may include verification of identity with photo ID, criminal record, vulnerable persons and background check with previous employers and given references.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React, Vue.js, and Angular.
  • Experience with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch.
  • Knowledge of responsive design principles and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1) and inclusive design practices.

Not required but strong assets:

  • Knowledge of facilitation, able to recommend ideation workshop activities and comfortable leading a room
  • Experience utilizing user research and testing to inform design decisions. Ability to prepare for and run unbiased user interviews, and contribute to synthesizing results
  • International experience and/or designing and developing in multiple languages are assets.

Soft Skills & Work Ethic

  • Empathy and Sensitivity: A survivor-centered mindset, with a deep understanding of the need for trauma-informed and inclusive user experiences.
  • Knowledge of multilingual or multicultural interfaces to meet the needs of diverse user groups (e.g., survivors from immigrant or marginalized communities).
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with developers, designers, researchers, and community partners.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to iterate and improve based on survivor feedback and user testing results.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in design and documentation to ensure a seamless and impactful user experience.
  • Communication: Have a knack for storytelling and are comfortable communicating ideas to a group of internal stakeholders, explaining rationale behind design decisions. You can present your designs and iterate based on collaborative feedback and insights from user testing.
  • Project Management: Capable of prioritizing and meeting deadlines in fast-paced environments.
