Maintenance Worker (Temporary, Full-time)

The Maintenance Worker performs minor building repairs and maintenance at all Union Gospel Mission (UGM) facilities.
This is a 6-month temporary, full-time position. The starting range for this position is $25.01 to $27.33 per hour.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
Assist with maintenance work as assigned at any one of UGM’s properties. Responsibilities may include any or all of the following:
- Ensure proactive care to all exterior and interior areas.
- Complete routine building maintenance work including structural, carpentry, painting, drywall repair, lock repair, fence repair, ground care, and other related ad hoc maintenance projects.
- Repair all building equipment.
- Carry out routine and preventive maintenance including adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, refrigeration, ventilation, plumbing and electrical systems.
- Consistently inspect and ensure that security and safety measures are in place.
- Follow a checklist to perform periodic inspections of mechanical, transformer, and boiler rooms, and provide feedback to Maintenance Manager.
- Provide periodic inspection to UGM’s fleet of vehicles, and report findings to Maintenance Manager.
- Patrol lighting of fire escapes, fire panel, public areas, service and exit signs. Repair and service these areas as required.
- Move furniture, equipment and supplies and coordinate movers when necessary.
- Shovel snow on walkways and entrances. Spread gravel on driveways.
- Maintain cleanliness of shop.
- Maintain detailed log book of work activity.
- Respond to department heads’ and residents’ requests and complaints in a courteous, prompt, and professional manner.
- May periodically be required to perform janitorial work.
- Maintain awareness of potential security concerns and report these to Manager.
- Report all maintenance issues, pest problems, and safety and health concerns to Manager.
- Maintain a positive, productive and professional relationship with tenants, guests and employees.
- Participate in staff meetings, training and development opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as required or assigned by Manager.
- Adhere to all UGM published policies, practices and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three years recent related experience. A TQ (trades qualification) certificate in a trade or a building operator certificate is an asset.
- Other combinations of lived experience and education may be considered.
- Able to inspect, assess, and determine repair requirements, and perform minor repairs for heating, cooling, refrigeration, and ventilation, with skills in plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Good knowledge of painting, dry-wall repair, and the basics of carpentry and the ability to complete these tasks at a high standard.
- Current knowledge of WCB regulations.
- Completely familiar with building fire and safety regulations and procedures.
- Some familiarity with the building code requirements for repairs.
- Knowledge of key access systems is an asset.
- Valid Class 5 driver license. Demonstrated ability to drive safely and responsibly. Clean Driver’s Abstract required.
- WHIMS training an asset.
- Basic computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook).
Working Conditions:
- Work Location
Work is generally performed indoors, with 10% of the time spent outdoors in all types of weather.
- Physical Requirements
Duties require extended periods of standing and/ or walking. Duties require occasional periods of climbing, pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, keyboarding, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs occasionally and up to 35lbs regularly.

Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises. Occasional environmental exposures to cold, heat, and water. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.
- Hours of Work
On-call work is required. Some weekend or evening work may be required. Moderate overtime may be required. Will be required to report to different locations as operational needs demand.
