Spare is looking for a Controller with FP&A experience to lead all aspects of financial management including full cycle accounting, financial reporting, budget and forecasts preparation, as well as the development of internal control policies and procedures.
You’ll be a senior member of our Finance team at Spare and will have the opportunity to help shape the future of the team as it grows, as well as provide valuable coverage for a team member on parental leave. This role has the potential to carve off significant FP&A accountabilities and own that function in the near future.
Our HQ is Vancouver, BC, but this position is open to remote work options across Canada with a strong preference for candidates in PST timezone. We have employees located across Canada, with the opportunity for supported co-working, as desired.

Key Responsibilities
- Team Management : lead a remote Finance team effectively
- Full-cycle accounting processes: AR/AP, Sales Commissions, month-end and year-end functions, Canadian sales tax filing & financial reporting.
- Work with the executive team to maintain effective budgeting & planning oversight
- Oversee implementation of new tools and processes such as Mosaic, ERP’s and payroll solutions.
- Finetune existing processes and build out new effective, scalable processes for accounting functions, including invoicing schedules, global payroll, etc.
- Own high level FP&A activities such as, annual budgeting process and quarterly forecasting & models.
- Collaborate with department heads to establish budget targets and analyze variances to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Oversee and finetune your team's day-to-day accounting tasks and responsibilities to ensure our books/records are updated in a timely manner.
- Manage internal payroll process and work with our payroll vendor to ensure payroll is reviewed and submitted on time
- Work with our external tax vendor to ensure corporate taxes are properly handled
- Assist with financial due diligence activities such as audits in cooperation with external funders and VC’s.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Qualifications:
-You have 5 to 10 years experience as a Senior Accountant, Controller, or Financial Manager at a medium-sized company in Canada.

-You have a combination of education and deep experience, holding professional accounting designations such as CPA, CFA, etc.
- You have at least 3 years of leadership experience, having led a team with 3-5 direct reports previously.
- Experienced with preparing financial statements under ASPE
- Experienced with preparation and review of financial audits and tax filings for financial / investment entities
-You are comfortable operating in a Saas-heavy environment, have extensive experience using various cloud accounting software and new tool implementations.
- Comfortable working shoulder-to-shoulder with a talented finance team and close to execution level.
- Ability to think systemically and envision a better future for enhancing systems and processes with an eye to scale.
Nice to Have:
- Experience lead teams in SaaS technology companies and startups.
- Experienced with preparing financial statements under IFRS
- Experience with US Tax and tax filing protocols preferred.
- Experience leading major tool changes and implementations.
- Experience with tax, payroll and other foorms of audits
