Job Description:
We are looking for a proactive and experienced Referral and Results Clerk to join our virtual healthcare team. In this role, you’ll be responsible not only for managing and coordinating referrals but also reviewing results and actioning certain medical findings such as initiating prescription adjustments and providing follow-up care instructions under direct supervision or standing orders from a physician.
This is a part-time, remote position ideal for someone with a clinical background (e.g.RN or PA)who understands medical terminology, lab result interpretation, and can function with a high degree of autonomy in a collaborative virtual environment.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and process all incoming referrals from physicians and PAs.
- Triage and prioritize referrals based on urgency, completeness, and medical necessity
- Monitor emails and faxes for new referrals, lab results, and patient communications
- Review lab and diagnostic results and flag abnormal or urgent findings to the ordering physician
- Under physician guidance or standing protocols, action certain results (e.g., prescription adjustments, adjust medical notes, fill in site specific imaging requisitions)
- Prepare and submit prior authorizations and insurance-related paperwork
- Maintain internal referral tracking systems, databases, and directories
- Accurately document all actions in the EMR, including referrals, communications, and follow-up plans
- Notify patients about upcoming appointments or instructions based on result findings
- Ensure all practices are HIPAA-compliant and protect patient confidentiality
- Participate in virtual team and medical meetings
Research and identify the most appropriate specialists or clinics based on clinical need and insurance eligibility - Respond to patient inquiries related to referral status, lab results, or follow-up care
- Support patients in finding facilities that will accept their requisitions based on health insurance
Required Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in a healthcare administrative or clinical support role (Referral Clerk, MOA, LPN/RPN, or similar)
- HIPAA certification
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, medical specialties, lab result interpretation, and medication management
- Experience with EMRs and familiarity with portals such as Quest/Quanum
- Ability to act on physician-directed tasks with professionalism and accuracy
- Proficient with Gmail, Excel, Zoom, Slack, Adobe PDF
- Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and documentation skills
- Strong communication skills with patients, providers and other team members
- Must be fluent in English; a second language such as Spanish would be an asset
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience adjusting medications under physician protocols (e.g., in a telehealth, clinic, or home care setting)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), or Medical Office Assistant with extended clinical duties
- Experience working in teleheath settings
