Position Summary
Renaissance is looking for an experienced Laboratory Coordinator to join our R&D Team. This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, and as a member of the R&D team, the Laboratory Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating lab and facility maintenance, safety, supplies and inventory, and lab equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Lab & Facilities Maintenance
- Coordinates and supports the daily activities for all scientific teams (Molecular Biology, Fermentation, Chemistry, Entomology, Cell culture and Development).
- Communicates with the building management team to ensure laboratory utilities and facilities are maintained and repaired.
- Coordinates/performs routine laboratory housekeeping functions such as recycling activities, hazardous waste segregation/ disposal, and sterilization of laboratory supplies such as pipette tips, media bottles and flasks.
- Ensures the laboratory is clean and organized.
- Writes SOP’s for new maintenance/general lab activities.
Safety
- Enforces guidelines and practices to ensure the safe and proper operation of laboratory equipment.
- Leads the Occupational Health and Safety/fire safety and evacuation guide committees.
- Ensures the lab complies with our Environmental Management Plan and coordinates external consultant visits.
- Ensures that new employees are familiar with laboratory operational requirements. Including all the safety and emergency procedures, as well as the appropriate procedure to dispose of chemical/biological hazards.
- Oversees employee safety training, including WHMIS/First aid and UBC safety training courses.
- Proactively updates and maintains safety-related documentation.
Supplies & Inventory
- Takes inventory, orders requested supplies and organizes the receipt & storage of common use laboratory supplies.
- Works with the accounting team ensure the purchase orders and coding processes are properly filled out.
- Collaborates with vendors to negotiate pricing, place orders, and ensure timely delivery of supplies.
Lab Equipment Maintenance
- Schedules and oversees routine basic maintenance/calibration of common use equipment (scales, pipettes, freezers, centrifuge, autoclave & dishwasher, laminar flow hood).
- Stores and maintains equipment service and operation manuals.
- Coordinates external visits/audits to make sure the Lab/equipment is working in compliance with the appropriate regulatory systems.
- Assists scientific staff in diagnosing causes of equipment or material failures. Identifies possible solutions to problems.
- Ensures routine maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment is performed.
- Additional duties, as required.
Education & Experience Required:
Undergraduate degree in a science field or College diploma (laboratory technician or technologist).
Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in laboratory operations or management (preferably in an industrial setting).
Significant experience in overseeing the safe and efficient day-to-day operations of an industry R&D laboratory (life sciences or biotechnology).
Ability to clearly communicate both written and verbally using honest, and effective communication.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot laboratory equipment maintenance and repairs, including diagnosing issues and performing minor repairs.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team setting, must have a strong self-starter work ethic/attitude.
Ability to adapt and thrive in an entrepreneurial, growing, and changing work environment.
Problem-solving attitude; willingness to learn & work as part of a team to accomplish shared goals.
Ability to prioritize workload and allocate time/resources accordingly.
Demonstrated ability to follow policies, SOPs, GLP and instructions.

- Salary range $50,000 - $70,000 (to be negotiated based on multiple factors)

Position Details
This is a full-time, permanent role. General workdays are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday to Friday.
