Content Marketing Manager

Marketing & Communications
Toronto, ON, Canada
Posted on Wednesday, June 12, 2024
Our mission is to increase the success rate of small businesses. Traditional banking has been a growth limiter rather than a growth enabler for business owners, and we’re changing that. Relay is the all-in-one, collaborative money management platform. We’re building for employer SMBs and their finance function, internal and external, and are focused on delivering a human-centric customer experience. Ultimately, we help SMBs be ‘on the money'.
Relay is building banking that creates total cash flow clarity and control for small businesses. We’re looking for a Content Marketing Manager to help us scale our thought leadership function and forge meaningful, lasting connections with our customers.
We’re after the 33-million ‘Heart of America’ SMB market—the small businesses that underpin the economy. The boutique creative agency, the family-owned plumbing business, the online store selling handmade jewelry, the accounting firm next door.
Collectively, these businesses employ over half of the US workforce. But despite their impact on all of us, they regularly struggle with cash flow (68% will experience a cash flow crisis in their lifetime) and continue to be drastically underserved by traditional banking.
Relay is changing that. We’re doing it through a banking platform that gives them cash flow control, partnerships with small business advisors and communities like Profit First, and content that shows small businesses a better way to get on the money.
That’s where you come in.
Content has been an integral part of our growth at Relay, and will play a major role as we grow our thought leadership function. Reporting to the Content Marketing Lead, the Content Marketing Manager will join a team of quality-obsessed marketers and creatives.
We’re looking for someone who knows how to develop original, compelling thought leadership content, can comfortably manage a project pipeline, and is excited to create cash flow and business finance content that goes beyond the cookie-cutter.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Create high-quality, engaging content, including articles, whitepapers, case studies, eBooks, webinars, newsletters, social media posts, and others
  • Talk to customers and do in-depth research to develop insights into what draws and holds the attention of business owners across different industry segments
  • Work with the leadership team and internal subject matter experts to develop and execute a content strategy that grows our executive profiles on social channels (i.e., LinkedIn, Twitter)
  • Own and continuously improve our project management process to ensure timely content production, visibility for stakeholders, and priority alignment with growth goals
  • Build and manage our editorial calendar and work to maximize Relay’s content distribution
  • Collaborate with internal and external designers to elevate all of Relay’s content campaigns
  • Help onboard, manage, direct, and inspire external writers and contractors to deliver best-in-class content for our audience
  • Measure, optimize, and report on content performance
  • Work closely with growth, sales, product, and customer success teams to ensure content aligns with business goals and customer needs
  • Flex your writing and editorial muscles to ensure that everything Relay’s internal teams and external influencers produce is on-brand, on-point, and delightful to our audience

Who You Are:

  • You have 4+ years of combined experience in marketing, content management, or editorial
  • You’re a strong project manager with a proven ability to prioritize tasks that maximize your impact while working independently
  • You have experience interviewing subject matter experts and leveraging their input and perspective to develop authentic, informed content
  • You are genuinely excited about creating inspiring, helpful content for small businesses and their owners/operators, and care deeply about their success
  • Creative. You know how to leverage established tactics, but you can also think beyond the "playbook" to bring creative new ideas for growth
  • A storyteller at heart; you understand the power of narrative in shaping content strategy and leverage that to tell diverse stories
  • An exceptional writer, you love to perfect your craft and can coach others on their writing. You can adapt your tone and style depending on the audience and type of asset being created
  • Committed to driving meaningful marketing impact through content; you understand how content fits in the marketing funnel, and continually deepen your skill set
  • Process-driven. You can push projects forward internally and when working with partners
  • Data-driven. You can use data/analytics to measure the impact of your work and then use it to iterate based on its impact on our funnel

Bonus points:

  • You have a background in crafting content about small business cash flow and money management, or deep expertise in one of the following industries: e-commerce, real estate investing, trades, or non-profits
  • You have experience producing video content (for example, you’ve produced video interviews, have written scripts in the past, or have experience editing video, etc.)
  • Familiarity with keyword research and SEO software (e.g. Ahrefs, Google Search Console, Clearscope)
  • You have experience working at a startup or high-growth environment

Our Commitment To You:

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity: Relay employees are Relay owners, complete with equity and a competitive salary.
  • Comprehensive health benefits: enjoy full health benefits from day one. We offer flexible Health or Wellness Spending Accounts and medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents.
  • Flexible vacation and time off: every team member starts with 15 vacation days and 5 flex days to use as needed, plus an extra week of office closure during the end-of-year holidays so you can take time off to recharge and come back better for our customers.
  • Parental leave with top-up: we offer 12 weeks off with a 100% salary top-up for all full-time employees, regardless of location, and accessible for all parents: birthing, non-birthing, and adoptive.
  • Hybrid work environment: we value meaningful collaboration and connection at our Toronto office twice a week, with lunch, snacks, and beverages on us.
  • Dog-friendly space: can dogs really make you happy and healthy? We don’t know for sure, but since we don’t want to chance it, our office is 100% floof-friendly.
  • Personal and professional growth: through ongoing feedback, mentorship, and coaching, work with peers and leaders who are invested in your growth and success.
  • Top-tier equipment: as a Mac-first company, our Toronto offices have everything you need to produce your best work comfortably, from multiple screens to ergonomic seating.
  • Social connection: we believe in celebrating our wins with two annual company-wide get-togethers, quarterly team events, happy hours, and special events and networking opportunities with industry leaders.
  • We’re driving real change for small business owners, powered by truly remarkable people. At Relay, you’ll find the confidence to take changes, trust to take initiative, and the support you need to build a career you love. Here, we make sure every team member feels empowered to make big decisions, encourage to ask tough questions, and challenged to take risks that result in work we’re all proud of. We give you the baton–you run the Relay.

The Interview Process:

  • Stage 1: A 30-minute Google Meets video call with a member of the People Team
  • Stage 2: A 45-minute Google Meets video call with the Content Marketing Lead
  • Stage 3: A take-home case study + writing sample, followed by a 1-hour presentation of your solution to our Marketing team
  • Stage 4: A 30-min Google Meets video call with a member of Relay’s Leadership team
  • Research shows that women-identifying and other marginalized individuals tend to only apply when they meet 100% of the qualifications. If you don't have all the listed qualifications, we encourage you to apply anyway, and together we'll figure out if this is the best role for you!
What’s Important to Us:
At Relay, we believe that diversity is key to building high-performing teams, and creating an inclusive work environment is our priority. We are an equal-opportunity employer and we welcome people of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and skills.
We will work with applicants to provide accommodations at any stage of the hiring process. If you require accommodations during the interview process, please email your People Team contact, and we will work with you to meet your needs.
