About NordSpace
NordSpace (https://nordspace.com) is a Canadian startup with the mission to advance life on Earth, from space. NordSpace is committed to extremely rapid innovation and development of the most ambitious aerospace projects with the most ambitious team. With divisions spanning everything from rockets to satellites, NordSpace is driven to bring space closer to Earth and inspire generations of space explorers.
Role
The Facility & Equipment Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and upkeep of NordSpace's 60,000 sqft headquarters, which houses engineering offices, prototyping labs, cleanrooms, and an advanced manufacturing floor for the company's launch vehicle and space systems programs. This role owns the availability and reliability of the facility and its production equipment, from CNC machines and metal 3D printers to cleanroom HVAC systems and building electrical and plumbing infrastructure. The right candidate is a hands-on problem solver who can diagnose and fix issues across mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, keep complex manufacturing equipment running, and manage the facility environment to the standard required for aerospace-grade hardware development.
- Reports to: VP of Operations.
- Works closely with: Senior AIT Technician, Manufacturing Engineering, Composites Technicians, Engineering Leads, Quality Assurance, and external maintenance contractors and equipment vendors.
- Accountability: Facility operations, building maintenance, manufacturing equipment uptime, cleanroom environmental compliance, and workplace safety across NordSpace's headquarters.
Core Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Repair:
- Own the preventive maintenance program for all manufacturing and lab equipment (CNC machines, wire EDM, sinker EDM, metal 3D printers and powder handling systems, composites AFP robotics, welding equipment, and test instrumentation), managing schedules, spare parts inventory, and calibration tracking to maximize uptime.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system faults on production equipment in-house, coordinating with vendors or specialized service providers when external support is required.
Facility Operations & Building Maintenance:
- Manage day-to-day facility operations, including building systems (HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing, compressed air, gas supply, lighting, fire suppression) and facility vendor relationships (janitorial, waste disposal, hazardous waste, building services).
- Perform hands-on electrical and plumbing repairs and modifications, coordinating with licensed contractors for work requiring permits or exceeding in-house scope. Oversee cleanroom environmental controls to maintain temperature, humidity, particulate, and pressure standards.
Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure the facility meets all applicable health, safety, fire code, and environmental regulations (OHSA, fire marshal, hazardous materials). Maintain lockout/tagout procedures, machine guarding, PPE, and emergency response equipment across the facility.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, drive corrective actions, and manage facility access control, security systems, and after-hours protocols to protect equipment, IP, and flight hardware.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in Industrial Maintenance, Millwright, Electromechanical Technology, Facilities Management, or a related skilled trades program. Licensed trade certification (Industrial Electrician, Millwright, Plumber) is a strong asset. Equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
- 5+ years of experience in facility and/or industrial equipment maintenance within manufacturing, aerospace, defence, automotive, or a comparably equipment-intensive environment.
- Hands-on proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with practical experience maintaining CNC machines, EDM equipment, industrial robotics, welding systems, or additive manufacturing equipment. Experience with multiple equipment types is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of cleanroom operations, environmental monitoring, HVAC systems, building codes, OHSA requirements, and hazardous materials handling and storage regulations.
- Experience developing and managing preventive maintenance programs, including scheduling, documentation, and spare parts management. Able to prioritize across competing demands and make sound judgment calls on when to fix in-house versus call in specialized support.
