About NordSpace
NordSpace (https://nordspace.com) is a Canadian startup with the mission to advance life on Earth, from space. NordSpace is committed to extremely rapid innovation and development of only the most ambitious aerospace projects with only the most ambitious team Canada has to offer. With divisions spanning everything from rockets to satellites, NordSpace is driven to bring space closer to Earth and inspire generations of space explorers.
About the Role
We are hiring Mechatronics Engineering Interns from a range of backgrounds to support NordSpace’s mechanical design and development team in bringing our next suborbital launch vehicle systems to life — from design to prototyping, assembly, and test. This role is for someone who loves to build, experiment, and learn by doing. You’ll work directly with senior engineers to design, fabricate, and integrate mechanical and electromechanical assemblies for flight hardware, ground systems, and test rigs. As part of NordSpace’s vertically integrated approach, you’ll gain hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing and test infrastructure, including metal additive manufacturing, CNC machining, composites fabrication, and automated testing. This position includes the opportunity to travel to our launch and test sites to assist in vehicle integration, ground operations, and flight campaigns. If you’re the type of engineer who can take an idea off a napkin sketch and turn it into working hardware by the end of the week, you’ll fit right in.
Core Responsibilities
- Support the mechanical and mechatronic design, prototyping, and integration of suborbital launch vehicle systems and ground support equipment.
- Create and modify 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings under guidance from senior engineers.
- Assist with fabrication, assembly, and functional testing of flight and ground hardware using in-house machining, additive manufacturing, and electronics lab tools.
- Instrument and wire mechanical and electromechanical systems for data capture and control testing.
- Soldering and assembly of cable harnesses.
- Write software for test campaigns and flight systems.
- Participate in design reviews, hardware fit checks, and system integration activities across mechanical, electrical, and avionics teams.
- Conduct hands-on validation and troubleshooting of prototypes during test campaigns.
- Prepare test setups, collect and analyze data, and document results in accordance with NordSpace engineering standards.
- Support launch site operations, including vehicle integration, system testing, and flight support (travel required).
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science (or related discipline).
- Strong hands-on skills with mechanical assembly, prototyping, and instrumentation (you enjoy working in the lab or shop environment).
- Familiarity with CAD design tools (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360).
- Basic understanding of electromechanical systems, sensors, and control components.
- Experience with prototyping hardware in the loop and real-time control systems.
- Programming / systems experience with LabVIEW, C, MATLAB, Python, etc.
- Familiarity with TI Cortex and C2000 series MCUs.
- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, and lab equipment safely and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, iterative engineering environment.
- Strong problem-solving attitude and willingness to tackle unfamiliar technical challenges.
- Ability and willingness to travel within Canada for test and launch operations.
- Experience with additive manufacturing (FDM, SLS, DMLS) or machining.
- Exposure to control systems, embedded hardware, or data acquisition setups.
- Previous project, design team, internship, or competition experience in aerospace, robotics, or automation fields. Lead experience with Rocketry, Rover, UAV, Submarine, Robotics, or Formula SAE design teams preferred.
