About OwnersBox

OwnersBox is a sports-tech company reimagining how fans play Fantasy Sports. We design innovative, real-money fantasy sports games that bring fans closer to the action while helping shape one of the fastest-growing industries in sports.

We’re a lean, ambitious team building a best-in-class platform used by passionate sports fans across North America. Working at OwnersBox means real ownership, real impact, and real opportunities to grow. You’ll work alongside smart, driven teammates in a fast-moving environment where ideas matter, execution wins, and progress is visible.

If you’re looking for a role where your work matters, you’re passionate about sports, and you want to help build the future of paid fantasy sports, OwnersBox is the place to do it.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Backend Software Developer to join our engineering team and contribute directly to the continued evolution of the OwnersBox platform. In this role, you’ll focus on building and maintaining the backend systems that power real-money fantasy sports products used by passionate fans across North America.

You’ll work primarily with Java and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)—including App Engine, Datastore, and Cloud SQL—to develop scalable, reliable services that support core product functionality. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, QA, and Design to translate requirements into backend solutions and ship features efficiently.

This role is well-suited for developers who take pride in their work, ramp up quickly, and are motivated to make an immediate impact in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Build and maintain Java-based applications and services running on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Utilize App Engine, Datastore, and Cloud SQL to deliver efficient, reliable cloud solutions.
  • Build systems with a focus on reliability, performance, and scalability.
  • Contribute to backend APIs and services that support core product functionality.

Cloud Infrastructure & Performance

  • Collaborate with DevOps to support CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
  • Monitor and optimize application performance and resource usage in a cloud environment.
  • Assist in evaluating GCP services and platform improvements as the system evolves.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work closely with Product, QA, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into backend solutions.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies (stand-ups, sprint reviews, retrospectives) as part of the development team.
  • Communicate progress, technical challenges, and solutions clearly with both technical and non-technical teammates.

Who You Are

  • Experience developing backend applications using Java.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform (App Engine, Datastore, Cloud SQL).
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and modern backend architectures.
  • Comfortable working on distributed systems and backend services.
  • Able to break down problems and deliver practical, scalable solutions.
  • Works well with cross-functional teams and communicates effectively.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and is able to pivot quickly when priorities change.
  • Able to get up to speed quickly in an existing codebase.
  • Takes pride in delivering high-quality, production-ready code.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of sports or fantasy sports is a plus!
  • Experience in a start-up or high-growth tech company.

Why You’ll Love Working Here

  • Innovative Tech Environment: Work with the latest cloud and software development tools to create high-impact solutions.
  • Impactful Work: Contribute to high-priority initiatives and see your ideas come to life quickly.
  • Collaborative Culture: Join a supportive team where every opinion is valued, and innovation is encouraged.
  • Career Growth: Enjoy meaningful opportunities for professional development through mentorship, continuous learning, and expanded responsibilities.
  • Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits.
  • Perks: Fully stocked lunchroom with drinks and snacks and frequent catered lunches and team events.

If this role sounds like the right fit for you, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now to become our Backend Software Developer and help shape the future of fantasy sports at OwnersBox!
