Job Description

The Technical Leader is responsible for leading the technical coordination of design, implementation, testing and customer site activities of complex control, information, process and automation systems within a project team environment. This role involves direct interactions with key internal and external stakeholders to validate technical solutions and define the best project execution strategies. The technical leader guides the development team, determines necessary checkpoints to achieve technical goals, and contributes to identifying and implementing innovations to enhance efficiency and operational excellence in projects.

Main roles and responsibilities:

o Project Involvement: Participate in projects from the budgeting stage through to delivery, specifying and validating solutions, controlling technical scope, and managing hours spent on technical tasks according to the project plan.

o Technical Accountability: Design, implement, test, and oversee customer-site startup of complex systems within a project team environment.

o Team Coordination: Follow up with the engineering team throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring execution control within planned costs and timelines.

o Risk Management: Identify and present technical risks at any project stage, advising Engineering and Project Managers promptly.

o Knowledge Application: Apply extensive knowledge of specific processes or manufacturing applications to various control or information technologies.

o Project Closure: Ensure all projects are closed with the required contractual documentation.

o Innovation and Reuse: Identify opportunities for and lead efforts to reuse engineering solutions or technologies across multiple projects.

o Trusted Content and Standards: Ensure the use of trusted content, standards, libraries and tools.

o Project Closure: All project documentation should be updated and properly saved in the project storage site, including lessons learned.

II) ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

FUNCTIONAL

  • Lead the design, implementation, testing, and startup phases of complex systems projects.
  • Identify technologies for standard offerings, new applications, and extensions of current architecture or software packages.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to plan and schedule project activities, such as work packages, Gap-Analysis, Activity duration, Resource requirement, Risk analysis, etc.
  • Work with Engineering Managers to plan and schedule resources.
  • Support the project plan with Project Manager.
  • Participate in key milestones during system implementation and startup, such as field Kick-Off Meetings (KOM) and acceptance discussions.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of specific industry codes and standards.
  • Lead or participate in defining appropriate control or information architectures during the proposal stage-
  • Lead technical meetings.

LEADERSHIP

  • Leads requirements definition, system conceptualization and design efforts for complex system projects.
  • Leads the internal engineering team – including GEBS – during all the project lifecycle.
  • May lead application related efforts on complex projects.
  • May lead contractors on project assignments.
  • Coaches and helps develop application knowledge of less-experienced engineers assigned to projects.
  • Leverages and shares specialized application knowledge or specialized technology knowledge within assigned business team and throughout Rockwell Automation.
  • Employs application knowledge to drive engineering standardization efforts for system software and/or hardware solutions.
  • Participates in industry standards committees or organizations.
  • Deal with Customers with excellent technical level and give them confidence that we really know what we are doing about technical stuff.

  • Supports an environment conducive to customer satisfaction.
  • Often serves as the lead engineering interface with customer for assigned projects.
  • Supports an environment conducive to successful team interaction.

  • Able to work under pressure.

BUSINESS

  • Draws upon application knowledge to assist in proposal.
  • Accountable for meeting project schedule, budgeted hours, and customer satisfaction targets.
  • Build partnerships at technical level of key customers.
  • Conceptualizes the technical solution and provides engineering hours estimates for sales proposals.
  • Responsible for following all applicable corporate, company, governmental and regulatory policies and procedures as appropriate for this position.

III) EDUCATION BACKGROUND

  • BS in Engineering or information technology discipline or equivalent knowledge; further education in engineering is a plus.
  • Holding technical certifications for Engineering/Information area (e.g. TÜV FSEng, Microsoft, CISCO etc.) – desirable
  • Project management training – desirable

IV) LANGUAGE

  • Intermediate English (mandatory);
  • Advanced English (desirable);
  • Intermediate Spanish (desirable).

V) EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Typically, eight or more years experience in a system, software, process automation or application engineering capacity includes successful field startup experience.

L4: A minimum of 8 years in the job or related areas.

Having wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Represents Rockwell Automation as a leading authority in a specific application or industry. Guides the work group to achieve the goals and reach a next professional level.

Rockwell Automation’s hybrid policy aligns that employees are expected to work at a Rockwell location at least Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays unless they have a business obligation out of the office.
