Job Description

Job Summary

The Machine Shop Tool and Die Maker technician is a skilled artisan responsible for the design, fabrication, and maintenance of precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and other specialized equipment. This role requires a high degree of technical expertise an both manual and computer-controlled machining process. The technician works from blueprints, sketches, and computer-aided design (CAD) files to create and repair tools with extremely tight tolerances, ensuring that manufacturing process can produce high-quality parts efficiently and accurately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabrication and Machining:
    • Read and interpret complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and CAD/CAM files to understand tools specifications.
    • Set up and operate a wide range of machine tools. Including manual and CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
    • Cut, shape, and form metal blocks and raw materials into precision-finished parts.
    • Perform precise measurements using a variety of instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to ensure parts meet exacting specifications.
  • Tool and Die Maintenance
    • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair existing tools, dies, and molds to address wear and tear, damage, or production issues.
    • Disassemble and reassemble complex tooling’s, fitting parts together with extreme accuracy.
    • Identify and correct imperfections in tools and dies to improve product quality and prevent defects.
  • Design and Process Improvement
    • Collaborate with engineers and production teams to design and develop new tooling.
    • Suggest modifications to existing tools or manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, or improve product quality.
    • Contribute to problem-solving and root cause analysis for production-related tooling issues.
  • Quality and Safety:
    • Test completed tools and dies to ensure they function correctly and meet all design and quality standards.
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area and ensure all equipment is well-maintained.

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience:
    • Completion of recognized tool and die maker apprenticeship program is highly preferred.
    • A technical degree or certification in machining, tool and die making, or a related field is a strong asset.
    • A minimum of 6 years of hands-on experience in a machine shop tool room environment.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in setting up and operating a variety of conventional and CNC machine tools.
    • Proficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and CAD drawings.
    • In-depth knowledge of metallurgy, metal properties, and heat-treating processes.
    • Excellent understanding of precision measurement techniques and the use of inspection equipment.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Exceptional attention to details and a high level of precision.
    • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
    • Ability to work independently on complex projects with minimal supervision.
    • Good communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with other departments.
