Job Description

As a Mechanical Design & Hardware Test Intern at OTTO By Rockwell Automation, you will help support both the design and testing phases of our AMR platforms. This hybrid role combines mechanical design and prototyping tasks with hardware testing, data analysis, and system validation to ensure the performance, safety, and reliability of our products. You will work on cutting-edge robotics technology, help prototype electromechanical systems, and help validate the robustness of these systems through real-world testing and analysis. You will report to Manager, Flatbed AMR Development. Your job location will be Kitchener, ON.

Your Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Prototyping

  • Support the design, verification, and upkeep of mechanical systems for our robots, including structural components for unmanned vehicles.
  • Assist with prototyping new electromechanical systems and validating their functionality.
  • Model and draft custom parts and assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Source and qualify new mechanical components and systems, ensuring they meet quality and performance standards.
  • Create and implement test plans for system performance and safety.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and improve mechanical systems based on feedback from tests and fieldwork.

Hardware Testing & Validation

  • Develop and execute validation tests for system functionality, vehicle dynamics, and performance targets.
  • Collect and analyze data from stress tests, troubleshooting, and failure analysis to inform product development.
  • Design and commission test setups, including developing test fixtures and measuring system reliability.
  • Help with vehicle dynamic performance validation and analysis.
  • Prepare detailed reports that document testing conditions, methods, and results, contributing to the optimization of the robot's performance.
  • Collaborate with other teams to ensure integration and coordination of tests and workflows.
  • Experience with mechanical design principles and hands-on prototyping experience.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software for modeling and drafting.
  • Familiarity with electrical components, harness drawings, and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience with basic electrical prototyping, troubleshooting, and testing.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and product specifications.
  • Capable of collecting and analyzing data using, Python, or other scripting tools.

The Essentials - You Will Have:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelors degree from an accredited university.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:

  • Experience with vehicle dynamics analysis or testing.
  • Familiarity with multibody modeling tools (e.g., MAPLESIM, ADAMS, Simspace).
  • Prior exposure to vibration, HALT/HASS testing, or reliability testing.
  • Experience with Linux-based operating systems.
  • Knowledge of ROS, C++, or Python programming for robotics applications.
  • Prior work in machine shops or with manufacturing processes.

For this role, the Base Salary Compensation is from $18-32/hourly. Actual pay will be based on factors such as skills, education, and experience. The start date of the Coop term is September 3rd 2025 and end date is December 19th 2025.
