The Opportunity
The Vice President, Origination & Syndication (“VP”) reports to the Senior Vice President, Origination & Syndication and plays a critical role in driving business growth, leading transaction execution, and developing talent across the team. This is a senior, client-facing role combining business development, capital structuring, and deal execution. The VP is responsible for originating new opportunities, managing key relationships, and leading transactions from initial sourcing through to funding and closing.
The VP operates as both an individual contributor and team leader, owning a personal pipeline while leading deal team to deliver high-quality, risk-adjusted financing solutions. This includes coordinating internal and external stakeholders, aligning capital sources, and ensuring efficient execution across all stages of the transaction lifecycle. This position is a new vacancy.
The Role
The VP is responsible for the full lifecycle of transactions, originating, structuring, and executing deals, while leading and developing a high-performing deal team.
Deal Team Leadership & People Development
- Ownership and execution of an entrepreneurial sales and go-to-market plan that that is aligned with the strategic vision of MZ and delivers on the KPIs of the organization.
- Lead and take full ownership of deal team, including accountability for execution, timelines, and overall deal outcomes.
- Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance management to team members, including annual delivery of performance reviews.
- Establish clear priorities, drive urgency, and ensure accountability across all stages of the transaction process.
- Support the development of team members into increasingly independent and effective contributors.
Origination & Relationship Management
- Identify new clients and build a sales pipeline of qualified developer opportunities.
- Grow existing client base and maintain relationships during the entirety of project lifecycles.
- Act as the senior relationship lead on transactions, providing strategic guidance and consultative solutions.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities aligned with MZ’s lending and capital strategy.
Capital Structuring & Syndication
- Align the structuring of financing solutions across multiple capital sources, including bank, institutional, and private capital partners.
- Coordinate internally and externally to align appropriate capital for each transaction.
- Deliver suitable risk-adjusted lending opportunities matching with Lender investment mandates.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with capital partners to support ongoing deal flow.
Transaction Execution & Underwriting
- Obtain and evaluate Borrower project specific financing information (i.e., budget, anticipated cashflows, valuations, Borrower credit status, capital structure, security, sales, market, cost comparable, overall risk profile, etc.) with sophisticated financial models/databases for prospective project/financing opportunities.
- Lead the evaluation and underwriting of complex development financing opportunities, including analysis of financial models, capital structures, market conditions, and risk factors.
- Guide deal team in preparing high-quality credit materials and investment presentations.
- Communicate with the Borrower and Lender stakeholders/clients to outline project strengthens and weakness and respond to questions as necessary.
- Review loan documents.
- Oversee negotiation, documentation, and closing processes to ensure timely and successful execution.
Portfolio Oversight & Risk Management
- Maintain ongoing visibility into transaction performance, key risks, and borrower obligations.
- Assist in the development and maintenance processes to identify or forecast potential issues, and highlight these concerns with the Business Development team, and broader Senior Management team.
- Proactively identify and address potential issues across active deals and provide creative solutions to problems.
- Continue to evaluate options which would create value for either the Borrower or Lender through reduced costs or improved risk mitigation.
- Ensure the Borrower meets their ongoing compliance requirements and drive closure of outstanding items.
Reporting & Communication
- Provide regular project reporting re. pipeline activities and management, forecasting, anticipated transaction closings/fundings, repayments, stage of completion, loan compliance, and other analysis as required.
- Assemble and present due diligence materials and professional marketing materials for presentation to prospective Lender clients.
- Prepare and present materials for internal stakeholders and capital partners.
- Contribute to broader business planning, performance tracking, and strategic initiatives.
What Are We Looking For?
- 10+ years experience in business development or account management in the real estate lending/mortgage industry or finance.
- 5+ years sales team management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with respect to business development, execution, and strategic thinking.
- Post-secondary education preferably in business or finance.
- Self-starter and strategic thinker with demonstrated leadership skills in managing a high performing team.
- Strong understanding of the construction and development process, associated financing metrics financial modeling skills.
- Experience drafting and reviewing legal financing documents.
- Working knowledge of real estate law and familiarity with federal and provincial laws and regulations that affect real estate lending.
- Excellent negotiation, sales ability, and presentation skills.
- Strong customer service focus, industry knowledge, and a team player.
- Proven ability to thrive in a constantly changing environment.
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present information to senior management, the Board of Directors, and Partners.
- Experience structuring transactions across multiple capital sources.
- Demonstrated ability to originate and close complex financing transactions.
- Valid G2/G driver’s license.
- Will be required to obtain a Mortgage Agent License if not currently licensed (paid for by the company).
Work Environment
- Domestic travel (across Canada) will be required for partner/client meetings as well as site inspections.
- This is a client-facing role requiring regular travel for meetings, site visits, and relationship development.
- The role is primarily office-based, with flexibility required to support client and business commitments.
Salary Range
$150,000 - $200,000
