The Opportunity
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Legal (the Director) will assist in leading, managing, and documenting MZ’s underwriting and funding activities. The Director will be responsible for preparing regulatory documents related to funding loans and issuing advances, managing all security documentation required to close the loans and advances, coordinating with external legal counsel in the preparation, negotiation, execution and processing of all documentation, coordinating internally with Account Managers, Project Managers and Analysts, as well as the financial group to coordinate fundings and advances. The Director will support the Principal Broker in complying with regulatory requirements, as needed. The Director will have two direct reports (Legal Analysts), and will be responsible for providing leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the Legal Analyst team.
The Role
People Operations:
· Responsible for providing regular coaching and mentorship for the Legal team.
· Oversee the Legal team’s annual performance reviews, including delivery of reviews.
· Drive the Legal team towards success through creation, development, assignment, and execution of team OKRs.
· Provide the Senior Leadership Team with departmental KPI updates on a regular basis.
Mortgage Funding:
· Coordinate with lawyers and insurance consultants on new transactions and follow through to completion of registration of security.
· Communicate with lawyers with respect to discharges, amendments, and collecting funding conditions.
· Assist with the review of commitment letters, amendments, renewals.
· Assist in preparation of mortgage documents for various lending partners.
· Track deal status via our online portal and managing various checklists and trackers.
· Stay up to date on applicable regulations.
Mortgage Administration:
· Assist in coordinating various legal agreements related to ongoing projects with external counsel.
· Coordinate documentation of amendments and renewals.
· Provide support with any Special Loans activity, including default/receivership proceedings as required.
Mortgage Discharge Support:
· Aid in preparation of discharge documentation and payment requisitions.
Compliance Monitoring:
· Assist compliance department with Borrower follow ups of loan deliverables.
· Prepare notices/reminders to Borrowers to ensure timely delivery of loan obligations.
· Assist in documenting of contractual mortgage renewals, extensions, and amendments.
Administration:
· Tracking and processing of legal invoices.
· Assist with lender onboarding process for new clients.
· Participate in ongoing initiatives with respect to process improvements.
What Are We Looking For?
· Outstanding leadership – the incumbent must be confident when executing tasks/assignments and have the ability to address issues head on.
· Exceptional attention to detail and analytical skills.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to effectively correspond across all levels within, as well as outside of the organization.
· Superb time management skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize between multiple competing commitments and deadlines.
· Experience presenting complex information to Executive teams in a clear, correct, and concise manner.
· Demonstrated ability to efficiently handle administrative tasks, multi-task, and delegate assignments as necessary.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, and generally adept with technology.
· Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in any of the following is an asset:
o Business Administration
o Law Clerk
o Legal Studies
o Paralegal Studies
· Will be required to obtain mortgage agent license with FSRA (paid for by MarshallZehr, if selected).
Preferred Requirements:
· Experience in any of Mortgage Administration, Asset Management, Commercial Lending, Banking, Financial Services, Real Estate Law, Real Estate Development and/or Underwriting is an asset.
Work Environment
· MZ offices are open Monday to Friday and employees are expected to work on site a minimum of 4 days per week, with the option of working remotely 1 day per week, as agreed to by the direct supervisor.
