Role Opportunity
Our tech team works collaboratively with clinicians, designers, and operators. Together, we are developing a platform enhancing the experience of patients, therapists, our team, and partners.
We’re looking for a software engineering leader to organize, lead, and strengthen our product engineering team and platform. This role will report to the CEO, and have three software engineers report to them (potential for team growth with time). This is a player-coach role, where hands-on development is expected. It is designed to scale as the company grows, so the role is ideal for a candidate with solid experience who is eager to grow their career while remaining deeply involved in hands-on execution.
The role is based in the GTA, with an expectation to work in the office (downtown Toronto) 2 days/week.
You can expect your role to be varied and evolve over time, but generally include:
  • Ownership of Product Engineering Process:
  • Define and implement key engineering priorities
  • Set up the right level of processes, enabling speed, communication, and quality
  • Participate in user discovery and product visioning and strategy
  • Technical Leadership:
  • Develop and execute short- and long-term plans, balancing business impact, user experience, and technical quality
  • Directly contributing code to our platform or customizing our third party tools
  • Team Mentorship & Development:
  • Mentor and support team growth, in a way consistent with Layla’s practices and values. We have a very high emphasis on ongoing development
  • Layla will support you to continue to grow your leadership skills over time
  • As a small team, we expect all of our teammates to improve the broader team and company. You will be an active participant in our culture through peer exchange, interviewing, new initiatives, etc.
Requirements
  • Experience
  • 7+ years of full stack software development experience. Minimum 2 years of experience as Technical Lead or Engineering Manager
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years in scaling startups (30-100 employees)
  • Experience working in B2C or building systems used by thousands of users
  • Full Stack JS experience (ReactJS, Node.js, Express)
  • Strong familiarity with AWS
  • Proven experience in both building and operating software platforms. Knowledge of how to manage tech support for a large number of users
  • Nice to have: Software Engineering degree, health tech experience
  • We welcome applications from a broad range of candidates including those with non-traditional backgrounds as well as Canadian or non-Canadian experience
  • Interests
  • Advocate for simple solutions and designs over complex ones, understanding when to move fast and when to slow down
  • Passionate about making a positive impact and improving people’s wellbeing
  • Ability to develop empathy for patients, therapists, and internal needs
  • Excited to create user-friendly, valuable, and beautiful products
  • Motivated by delivering products to users and learning from their feedback
  • Combining hands-on technical work with leadership, able to handle context switching
  • Professional Qualities
  • High curiosity and commitment to personal growth
  • Dependable with a track record of being practical and getting things done on time
  • Proactive with a growth mindset
  • Team-oriented and inclusive, promoting a welcoming environment
  • Responsive and highly communicative. Given the player-coach aspect, this role is for someone who can handle context switching well and thrives with open communication
