Game & Technical Artist Co-op (8 months)

The Opportunity
We’re looking for a motivated co-op student to support our art team and gain hands-on experience in both art production and technical implementation for video games for 8 months. This role blends creative contribution with technical problem-solving, giving you exposure to multiple departments while building your professional portfolio.
You’ll work closely with senior artists, game designers, and developers, learning how to adapt your work to our style and contribute directly to in-production projects.
A Game & Technical Artist Co-op’s Impact
Asset Support
- Cleanup and coloring of 2D assets (e.g., icons, UI elements, simple props).
- Assisting with color swaps and other small-scale art needs.
Technical Implementation
- Integrating 2D assets into Unity under guidance from senior peers.
- Supporting shader setup, rigging, and asset optimization.
- Assisting with simple animation or visual effects to enhance in-game presentation.
Collaboration
- Working with cross-disciplinary teams (design, development, art) to ensure consistency.
- Iterating on assets based on team feedback.
Stretch Opportunities (dependent on skills & interests)
- Concept sketching of small-scale elements (e.g., icons, motifs) to practice creative skills.
- Animation and rigging tasks for characters or UI.
- Assisting with shader work and visual effects.
Your Track Record Includes
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in a related field.
- Currently located in British Columbia.
- Artistic Foundation
- Solid drawing skills and a good sense of color, light, and composition.
- Ability to adapt to Hyper Hippo's artistic styles.
- Software Proficiency
- Adobe Photoshop
- Basics in Unity and willingness to learn quickly.
- Technical Curiosity
- Interest in shaders, rigging, and asset implementation.
- Problem-solving mindset and eagerness to explore the technical side of game art.
- Portfolio
- A portfolio showing solid 2D art skills (illustration, icons, or design work). Examples of technical work (Unity, rigging, shaders, etc.).
- Soft Skills
- Strong communication and collaboration.
- Proactive, positive, and adaptable.
- A genuine passion for video games.

This position is part of DigiBC’s Work Placement Program, which supports post-secondary students by providing experiential learning opportunities in animation, video, games, visual effects, and XR.
