Your Mission

As the Director of Business Development, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing the company's strategic growth initiatives, primarily focusing on international power market opportunities. Reporting directly to the VP of Markets & Analysis, you will lead the Business Development team and contribute significantly to the company's overarching goals and objectives. Your responsibilities include driving origination, early-stage development, regulatory strategies, financial analysis, and establishing and managing key relationships and partnerships to ensure the successful development and execution of project development.

Your Day-to-Day Adventures

  • Provide strategic leadership to the Business Development team, overseeing a range of opportunities and collaborating with origination leads to build and manage relationships with utilities, developers, and other key industrial stakeholders
  • Work closely with regulatory leads to develop market-specific regulatory strategies and navigate regulatory interventions and proceedings
  • Identify target markets and advance opportunities in designated markets, conducting comprehensive analysis on prospective projects and executing early-stage development activities such as land control, permitting, geology and other critical factors
  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis on local power market dynamics, macroeconomic trends, and other factors influencing power markets
  • Lead complex financial analyses for prospective projects, including pricing of offtake agreements for renewable paired and stand-alone long-duration energy storage projects
  • Identify opportunities, in conjunction with the regulatory team, to develop innovative revenue pathways in target markets by working with local policy and regulatory bodies that support the deployment of long-duration storage projects. This will require a deep understanding of local power market dynamics and macroeconomic trends.
  • Establish and nurture partnerships and stakeholder relationships essential for successful commercial outcomes
  • Devise market entry strategies for new jurisdictions, considering local power market conditions, regulatory landscape, customer base, political forces, and other influencing factors
  • Play a key role in the preparation and negotiation of term sheets and definitive agreements with development partners and other counterparties
  • Assist in due diligence processes associated with onboarding new partners
  • Prepare compelling pitches for prospective clients and contribute to the overall business development strategy
  • Undertake any other responsibilities necessary to drive the success of the Business Development team and the company

Who You Are

We are seeking a dynamic and strategic leader with a proven track record in business development within the power industry. The ideal candidate possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills, demonstrating the ability to build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and execute early-stage development activities in international markets. Strong analytical and financial acumen, combined with a forward-thinking approach, will be crucial for success in this role. The Director of Business Development should be a collaborative team player, inspiring those around them to achieve ambitious goals.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, or a related field (required); MBA or advanced degree (preferred)
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in business development, with at least 5 years in a senior role
  • Proven experience in the power industry, with a focus on early-stage development of renewable energy, energy storage, or related sectors
  • Strong understanding of North American power markets and regulatory landscapes
  • Demonstrated success in leading complex financial analyses for power projects, including pricing of power purchase agreements
  • Experience in establishing and managing partnerships, with a track record of successful commercial outcomes
  • Exceptional negotiation and deal-making skills
  • Ability to navigate and influence within a complex regulatory environment
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Willingness to travel as needed
  • Existing network and relationships within the International (with a focus on Europe, Middle East & Africa region as well as the Americas) power industry
  • Experience in developing and executing market entry strategies; and
  • Familiarity with long-duration storage technologies
