Your Mission:

Join Hydrostor in Sydney as our Operations Engineering Lead and play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of our operations. This role will be reporting directly to the Project Engineering Manager during the construction and commissioning and to the Director of Operations post commissioning. You will oversee and coordinate various operational activities to support the company's goals and objectives. You will define operations specific to the Silver City plant during the project phase and be a critical member of the project team. Post commissioning the role will transition into Power Plant Operations Engineer at the plant or shift into another project. As an integral part of our organization, your contributions will directly impact our ability to deliver innovative long-duration energy storage solutions and contribute to a sustainable future.

This position will require you to travel up to 50% of the time, during the project phase, between Sydney, Adelaide and project locations. Typical travel will be less than 50%.

Your Day-to-Day Adventures:

  • Lead the development of operational strategy during the project engineering and construction phases.
  • Identify and spearhead strategic enhancements to equipment design, operations, and maintenance practices, fostering efficiency and effectiveness within the plant.
  • Provide technical guidance with respect to all plant activities to ensure compliance with all appropriate regulations.
  • Work closely with the Hydrostor engineering team in Toronto to lead process evaluations, including materials, temperatures, flows, and pressures involving gases, fluids and solids. Examples of equipment are pumps, valves, generators, and rotating equipment.
  • Develop comprehensive technical/construction work scopes and meticulously evaluate technical proposals to ensure alignment with project objectives and standards.
  • Adhere to Management of Change Program requirements, facilitating smooth transitions and minimizing disruptions during modifications or upgrades.
  • Strategize and manage material, parts, and equipment inventories to uphold facility operations responsibly, ensuring efficient utilization of resources.
  • Offer expert guidance and support for monitoring, inspecting, and maintaining various plant systems and ancillary equipment, ensuring their reliability and functionality.
  • Conduct performance tests, analyze operational data, and devise operational plans and equipment recommendations aimed at optimizing performance and enhancing profitability.
  • Oversee adherence to document control processes, maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and internal protocols.
  • Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and standards to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify process improvements and implement efficiency enhancements to optimize operational performance.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track operational metrics and identify areas for improvement, and reporting.
  • Manage identification of components and systems requiring maintenance and ensuring planning is completed and scheduled.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, suppliers, and contractors to ensure timely delivery of goods and services and maintain quality standards.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to operations staff, including training and development initiatives to enhance team capabilities.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to streamline processes, reduce costs, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations and promote a culture of safety and sustainability within the organization.

Who You Are:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Operations Lead with a proven track record of success in operations management roles. The ideal candidate will have excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage cross-functional teams and drive operational excellence. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, along with a strategic mindset and the ability to identify and capitalize on opportunities for improvement. The successful candidate will be proactive, results-oriented, and passionate about driving positive change within the organization.

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, operations management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in operations management roles, preferably in the energy industry.
  • Proven track record of success in leading and managing operational and maintenance teams and driving process improvements.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and motivate teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a strategic mindset and the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations, with a commitment to promoting a culture of safety and sustainability.
  • Experience with inventory management, production scheduling, maintenance planning, energy isolation, and logistics coordination.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific tools and software applications like ERP systems and supply chain management software, work order planning and parts management.
  • Relevant certifications in operations management or related fields would be considered an asset.
