Job Summary
This role will be centered around the embedded (Hardware & Firmware) development of our proprietary devices. This is a role that you will grow in and understand where hardware fits in the broader picture. We are looking for someone self-driven and able to adapt in a fast-paced environment without losing attention to detail, someone who is not afraid to take the driver's seat, love to learn and can quickly grasp new concepts as they arise during work.
You will join our high performing product development team to design, bring-up, and test hardware for commercial medical devices and research studies. This entails the holistic design of PCB, development of firmware, interfacing with manufacturers, and testing of hardware within the broader system.

This is an 8-month minimum Co-op contract position!
Job Responsibilities
  • Develop firmware to enable fluids medical device’s calibration, acquisition of sensory data, and communication over Bluetooth.
  • Design schematics for sensor acquisition, power management, Bluetooth communication and other peripherals while meeting power and area requirements.
  • Layout PCB in coordination with mechanical and manufacturing staff to conform with industrial design and assembly procedures.
  • Integration of future sensors into system in accordance with product roadmap.
  • Collaborate with the sensors team to assemble and troubleshoot sensor systems.
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing team to achieve full automation.
  • Collaborate with the quality team to Develop Firmware/Hardware test and verification plans and protocols, and conduct prototype testing and verification testing.
  • Support on the device’s parts procurement, including component selection and PCBA BOM managementCollaborate with the sensors and staff to assemble and troubleshoot sensor systems.

Qualifications:
These are some of the skills we are looking for in an ideal candidate. If you check some but not all these boxes, please apply anyway!
  • Enrolled in a BASc program in Electrical, Mechatronics, Biomedical or related technical disciplines.
  • Proficient in written and oral technical communication, including excellent documentation and writing skills.
  • Experience in stage-gated product development and system design, including a sound understanding of embedded systems and general system thinking.
Hardware:
  • Competency in hardware aspects such as mixed-signal systems with electrochemical sensing and data acquisition, low-power systems and power optimization, and electronics assembly, initiation, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency in PCB design, utilizing industry-standard tools like KiCAD and Altium.
  • Familiarity with 3D design skills, preferably SolidWorks.
Firmware:
  • Strong embedded system programming skills, including firmware development experience in embedded C/C++, experience with firmware, FPGA, and PLC, preferably using nRF MCUs.
  • Comfortable with interfaces like SPI, I2C, USB, UART, and Bluetooth.
  • Experience with Git or equivalent Version Control Systems (VCS), understanding branching strategies.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing and familiarity with other embedded systems testing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of other programming/scripting languages, notably Python. Experience with Pytest is a bonus.
  • Experience with Analog discovery boards and Waveforms
  • Ability to perform sensor integration, deliver technical presentations, and showcase a strong analytical and research-oriented background.
  • Understanding of hardware/software co-design, with some software background.
  • Knowledge of supply chain management, production transfer, parts procurement, and resource management.
 
Bonus Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 and similar standards for Quality Management Systems.
  • Supply chain management and transfer to production.
  • Familiarity with impedance sensing and its operational principles.
  • Experience working with Azure and pipelines.      
  • Proficient in communication with suppliers and manufacturers.
