Mechatronics Engineer, Controls & Automation
Evercloak
Description
Evercloak is seeking a hands-on and driven Mechatronics Engineer, Controls & Automation to support the development and scale-up of EverDROP™, our membrane-based dehumidification technology. This role will focus primarily on controls, automation, instrumentation, and system integration for lab and pilot-scale dehumidification systems, with secondary support for mechanical design and prototyping when needed. Working closely with our engineering lead, this person will help build, program, troubleshoot, and improve experimental and pilot systems by integrating sensors, PLCs, VFDs, pumps, valves, and data reporting. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and is excited to take ownership of system design, commissioning, troubleshooting, calibration, and continuous improvement as EverDROP™ systems move toward commercialization.
What you’ll do
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
-
Design, program, and commission PLC-based control systems for lab and pilot-scale dehumidification equipment, including integration of sensors, VFDs, pumps, valves, actuators, and data reporting components
-
Develop and implement control strategies, alarms, interlocks, and data collection approaches to improve system performance, reliability, repeatability, and safety
-
Develop P&IDs, wiring layouts, control narratives, and other technical documentation for automated and semi-automated systems
-
Support the development, modification, and optimization of testing and pilot equipment for EverDROP™ systems as they transition toward commercial deployment, including light mechanical design, fixture development, and prototyping support when needed
-
Troubleshoot electrical, instrumentation, and control issues hands-on in lab and pilot setups, including wiring, signal quality, sensor interfaces, VFDs, PLC logic, and actuator performance
-
Work closely with the Product Development team to iterate on system designs with a focus on system requirements, scalability, robustness, and manufacturability
-
Collect, analyze, and document system and experimental performance data to support debugging, continuous improvement, and commercialization readiness
-
Support safe operation of equipment, maintain calibration records, and ensure systems and technical equipment are properly maintained and in good working condition
Qualifications & Experience
The Mechatronics Engineer, Controls & Automation is hands-on, detail-oriented, and motivated to make an impact in a fast-paced startup environment. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:
-
Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Automation, or a related engineering discipline
-
3-7 years of experience in controls, automation, instrumentation, mechatronics, or equipment/system integration in a lab, pilot, or manufacturing environment
-
Experience with closed-loop control systems, including integration of sensors, actuators, pumps, valves, and PID-based control strategies
-
Strong experience with PLC-based systems; familiarity with Carel PLCs, Siemens TIA Portal, or similar industrial control platforms is strongly preferred
-
On-site system integration and support, with the ability to debug issues across hardware, controls, wiring, instrumentation, and sensor interfaces
-
Experience with electrical systems, wiring, panel/device integration, and basic electronics used in instrumentation and automation systems
-
Prior HVAC, vacuum, fluid handling, or dehumidification/process systems experience is a strong asset
-
Experience selecting and implementing, VFDs, and microcontroller-based tools for prototyping or data acquisition
-
Proven experience developing, improving, and troubleshooting automated or semi-automated systems
-
Working knowledge of CAD tools (e.g., OnShape, Solidworks or similar) for mechanical support, layouts, fixtures, and system integration work
-
Mechanical aptitude, including the ability to support prototyping, fabrication coordination, and practical system build activities when needed
-
Experience designing experiments, collecting data, and performing analysis to drive system and process improvements
-
Solid understanding of instrumentation, signal types, sensor calibration, and control-system troubleshooting in physical systems
-
Experience with 3D printing, rapid prototyping, LabVIEW, Arduino, or similar development tools is an asset
-
Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality, reliability, safety, and documentation
-
Ability to take ownership of projects and drive work independently while collaborating across a small, cross-functional team
-
Comfortable working in a lab and workshop environment, including being on your feet for extended periods
-
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Working hours: 40/hrs week
Length: 12-month contract, with potential for extension
