Opportunity

e-Zinc is searching for an experienced and talented Sr. Scientist, Project Lead to work within the R&D function to drive the development of oxygen evolution electrodes (OEE) and oxygen reduction electrodes (ORE) for e-Zinc’s technology. You will combine deep electrochemical and materials science expertise with strong project leadership and external collaboration to deliver electrode technologies that advance our technology. This role offers the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of clean energy within a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This position will report directly to the VP, Research & Development.

Position Scope and Responsibilities

  • Lead and own the technical deliverables for cross-functional R&D projects focused on the development and characterization of OEE and ORE electrodes from technology readiness levels between 1 and ~4, within a technology development framework
  • Propose and develop concepts to address technical issues and meet performance targets based on scientific principles
  • Identify, work with, and manage external collaborators and suppliers to develop new technologies and to advance our understanding of the technology
  • Plan and execute experimental work on electrochemical, chemical and physical characterization of the OEE and OREs including benchtop tests and prototype testing
  • Perform data analysis on test results and communicate results and conclusions in the form of presentations and reports
  • Document results and analysis in the form of written technical reports, such as test and analysis reports
  • Collaborate across functions to progress the technology and the integration into product
  • Work in cross-functional teams to solve technical issues at various stages of development
  • Contribute to e-Zinc’s intellectual property portfolio through the creation of patent applications and trade secrets
  • Mentorship of other e-Zinc staff, fostering a high-performing and solution-oriented culture
  • Maintain a safe work environment for yourself and others

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science or related field plus 10+ years of industrial work experience in relevant fields.
  • Experience leading and coordinating cross-functional projects with external collaborators and partners, with a track record of success
  • Expert-level understanding and experience in oxygen evolution and reduction electrodes
  • Strong understanding of electrode fabrication processes
  • In-depth knowledge of electrochemistry and electrochemical systems, such as metal-air batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers
  • Deep understanding and experience in performing electrochemical testing and data analysis (EIS, Tafel analysis etc)
  • Excellent time management, communication, and organizational skills
  • A self-starter and adaptive learner. Motivated to strive and succeed in a start-up environment.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Additional Assets:

  • Experience in with durability testing, degradation analysis, and accelerated stress testing of OEE and ORE electrodes.
  • Experience with metal-air batteries, such as zinc-air.
  • A PhD with a focus on electrochemical energy storage or fuel cell systems
  • Experience constructing and running design of experiments (DoE’s)
