JOB SUMMARY:
As an experienced Performance Engineer at D2L, you will be a member of a small team with an important role in the success of our product. You will be responsible for understanding what load looks like for our customers, for designing and implementing tests to exercise that load and for analysis and sharing of insight with internal technical teams, with leadership and with customers. You will design and implement tooling, workflows and test coverage to support development teams in achieving strategic performance goals. And as a performance SME at D2L you will develop strategies to disseminate a performance mindset throughout the organization with guidance on methods, best practices, and strategy development.
The ideal candidate will focus on performance excellence in implementation and outcomes and will strive for this daily with best practices as well as new and creative strategies.
HOW WILL I MAKE AN IMPACT?
- Design, implement and maintain tooling and workflows to generate and visualize performance metrics.
- Implement and maintain tests and test coverage for targeted performance insight.
- Exercise Brightspace at load with internal and external tooling for targeted performance insight.
- Lead collaborative projects across technical teams targeting insight and optimization.
- Balance competing goals by tracking, analyzing and reporting on cost implications and outcomes of performance strategies.
- Communicate test plans, insights, and recommendations with internal technical teams, D2L leadership and customers through informal discussion, documentation, and presentations.
- Drive performance as a core component of Definition of Done through training and knowledge campaigns across the organization.
- Define and balance strategic and tactical tasks and communicate how goals and timelines align with our North Star.
- Drive D2L mindset around Software Performance as a core component of Software Quality

- Proficient in implementing processes to improve the outcome of technical and non-technical aspects of performance work.
- Ability to support development of a strongly collaborative team, teaching and learning from colleagues, seeking out opportunities to teach and learn, and leading technical meetings.
- Ability to successfully influence other teams to adopt techniques and tools for building performance into evolving Brightspace features.
- Seen as a technical leader on the team, and across D2L.
Skills
- Understands wide range of topics and disciplines that inform and impact quality
- Leverages tools to reproduce, analyze and identify root cause of bottlenecks
- Scripting and or programming,
- Performance Engineering core concepts
- General software quality core concepts
- Design and implementation of workflows and automation
- Ability to generate metrics that inform performance insight, techniques and tools for generating and analyzing, optimization and improvement strategies.
- Strong analytical skills using of a range of modern technologies to diagnose bottlenecks
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Postsecondary degree in computer or systems curriculum
- 7+ years of experience with scripting and/or programming
- 5+ years of experience in performance engineering practices
- Experienced with designing and scripting or programming enterprise test coverage.
- Experienced with version control, roadmap and defect management tools.
- Experienced with automating workflows to generate, visualize and analyze insight.
- Experienced with documenting technical and non-technical aspects of performance work and presenting to cross-functional audiences.
The expected base salary range for a new hire in this role is listed below. The annualized base salary offered is determined by each candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, education, training and experience. It is aligned to ensure both internal and external competitiveness using market data for the geographic location and industry. As part of the total compensation at D2L the role may be eligible for additional benefits including a Wellness Subsidy, Equity Grants, Variable Incentive, and more.
