WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Role:
We are seeking an R&D Intern to join our Advanced Technology Team. In this role, you’ll support research and development of advanced thermal and mechanical systems focused on two‑phase cooling. Reporting to the Advanced Technology Manager, you will help explore and test next‑generation thermal management solutions for high‑performance computing and enterprise servers. Responsibilities include assisting with simulations, design activities, hands‑on prototyping, and test method development in a fast‑paced, innovative environment.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research on emerging trends and technologies in thermal engineering specific to 2phase electronic cooling for high-performance compute and enterprise server applications.
- Translate research findings into innovative concepts and inventions that strengthen CoolIT’s leadership in liquid cooling solutions.
- Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other simulations to model and evaluate thermal system designs.
- Collaborate with internal teams to develop new products from conceptualization through prototyping.
- Participate in joint development activities with customers and technology partners.
- Design and execute component- and system-level testing to validate new concepts.
- Assemble prototypes and conduct hands-on testing in laboratory environments.
- Document simulation results, test data, and design iterations; provide recommendations for next steps in development.
- Review Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for new concepts and work with suppliers to assess feasibility and integration of new technologies.
- Contribute to fostering a culture of continuous innovation within the team.
- Identify and implement automation tools or methods to streamline routine tasks and improve workflow efficiency.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency by developing and implementing automation tools and methodologies across workflows.
Basic Qualifications:
- You must be enrolled in Post-secondary education in Mechanical Engineering with focus on thermal/Fluid.
- Available to work full time (40 hours per week) during the full duration of the term (8 months)
- Previous experience in thermal-fluid design and analysis, specifically around 2 phase cooling.
- Previous in-depth experience with design of experiments, experimental setup, and data acquisition.
- Familiar with flow boiling in micro channels.
- Previous experience in selection and evaluation of pumps, heat exchanger for cooling units.
- Previous experience in the lab environment for maintenance of equipment, sensor calibration and data acquisitions.
- Expert level proficiency in CAD design using SolidWorks.
- Expert level proficiency in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics).
- Proficiency in programming and developing coding (preferably in Python).
- Passionate about new technologies and a self-learner.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with data center cooling strategies.
- Experience with developing custom codes in LabVIEW.
- Good understanding of Hydronics system designs and solid understanding of fluid dynamics and heat transfer principles.
- Proficient in design, simulation, and selection of Heat exchangers and pumps.
- Create detailed mechanical designs & drawings.
