Job Description

As a Senior Hardware Electrical Engineer at Rockwell Automation, you'll take a leading role in shaping the next generation of power‑conversion hardware that drives industrial automation across the globe. In this position, you'll design and develop advanced power electronics for AC/DC motor drives—spanning rectifiers, inverters, switch‑mode power supplies, magnetics, and filtering—while bringing concepts to life through simulation, prototyping, and hands‑on laboratory testing. You'll contribute to product‑defining decisions, ensure adherence to global certification standards, and stay at the forefront of emerging power‑electronics technologies, all within an agile, collaborative engineering environment.

You will work a hybrid schedule at our office in Cambridge and will report to the Manager of Hardware Development.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Apply the electrical circuit and electro-mechanical systems design principles to lead the development of power HW for AC/DC motor drives - rectifiers/inverters, switchmode power supplies, magnetics and filter design.
  • Apply simulation tools for modeling, design and troubleshooting of complex power electronics circuits, systems and applications. Develop simulation models to support field engineers and customer applications.
  • Must follow and ensure safe work practices when working with high voltage power hardware.
  • Demonstrate excellent technical skills and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Stay up-to-date with technology advancements in power electronics, components, and design and simulation tools. Participate in technology investigation projects to make enhancements to future product design.
  • Understand and apply regulatory and certification standards that govern product design. Participate in regulatory standards committees and stay up-to-date on trends that impact product design and qualification.
  • Apply DFSS principles for concept selection and robust design.
  • Work in an agile/scrum environment.

The Essentials - You Will Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Relevant Field.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
  • Ability to travel for business, including internationally for up to 10% of time.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Proficient with simulation of power converter and motor drive systems.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital circuit design for AC motor drives – protection circuits, gate drivers, feedback circuits, signal conditioning, switch-mode power supplies
  • Working knowledge of failure modes and experience with troubleshooting subsystems and components of AC drives.
  • Experience with PWM techniques and knowledge of motor control algorithms.
  • Working knowledge of application issues with AC drives including mitigation methods – harmonics and power quality, motor insulation, common-mode currents, harmonic filters, dv/dt and sine-wave filters.
  • Experience with magnetics design and specification.
  • Experience with UL, CSA and CE standards and application to AC drives design (electrical safety, functional safety, EMC, energy efficiency) for design and qualification testing (e.g. UL/IEC 61800-5-1, IEC 61800-3).
  • Experience designing and creating AutoCAD electric drawings for industrial motor control systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLC control systems and user interfaces.
  • Knowledge of product design using the Scaled Agile Framework environment (SAFe)
  • Demonstrated application of Design for Six Sigma principles.

What We Offer:

  • Health Insurance including Medical and Dental
  • Health Care Spending Account (HCSA – dependent on the plan chosen)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • Retirement plans
  • Paid Time off
  • Volunteering Time off
