The Youth Program Teaching Assistant (TA) plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the summer camp. Working closely with the instructor, students, and the Youth Program Coordinator, the TA provides support during class, assists in managing classroom activities, and contributes to maintaining a positive, engaging, and safe learning environment. This is a temporary full-time role for up to 9 weeks from June 23 to August 22, 2025. Candidates selected for interviews will be contacted starting in April 2025.

Note: This role will be an in-person role, 5 days per week, at designated University Campus

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Classroom Support:

  • Assist the instructor with maintaining effective classroom management, ensuring students are engaged and on task.
  • Provide additional help and clarification during lessons, ensuring students understand the material and remain focused on the topic.
  • Support the instructor in managing group work, facilitating student interactions, and ensuring students stay on track with their assignments and class activities.
  • Maintain classroom cleanliness, ensuring the space is tidy and well-organized before, during, and after class.

Engagement with the Discord Community:

  • Answer any questions from both online and on campus students, regarding the course material in the Discord community forums.
  • Monitor the community forums, providing timely and helpful responses to students’ inquiries.
  • Engage with students to encourage interaction, support peer-to-peer learning, and create a positive learning atmosphere online.

Troubleshooting and Technical Support:

  • Help students troubleshoot issues during class, including technical problems with computers, Raspberry Pi setups, or other equipment used in the course.
  • Provide assistance in resolving technical challenges to ensure students stay engaged and can continue their work without interruptions.
  • Work with the instructor and students to resolve any issues that may arise with course materials or technology, ensuring minimal disruption to the learning experience.

Logistics and Support:

  • Supervise students during lunch breaks and other scheduled breaks, ensuring they return to class promptly.
  • Ensure classroom spaces are prepared each day, with all necessary supplies and equipment available, tested, and ready for use.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment to support student learning.
  • Perform logistical tasks such as printing handouts, managing inventory of required hardware (including Raspberry Pi setups), and maintaining classroom supplies like markers, pens, pencils, and paper.
  • Ensure Wi-Fi passwords are clearly communicated to all students, and that everyone knows how to access the network without confusion.

Communication and Coordination

  • Maintain positive communication with instructors, the Youth Program Coordinator, parents, and students throughout the course.
  • Assist in supervising any on-campus tours or visits to other locations, ensuring students are safe and engaged.

Student Support and Safety:

  • Ensure the well-being and safety of students during class, breaks, and other activities.
  • Report any health issues, injuries, or illnesses promptly to the Youth Program Coordinator and assist the student as needed.
  • Support the Instructor in maintaining classroom etiquette and help students stay focused during the course.

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Perform any additional duties as required by the Youth Program Coordinator or Management Team to support the smooth operation of the camp.

    ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Previous experience working with youth/teens aged 9-18
    • Technical coding, programming experience is required (e.g. with Python, Unity, React, JavaScript, etc.)
    • Experience with STEM youth after-school programs or camps is desirable
    • Actively enrolled at a University or College in a degree or diploma program in a relevant field (e.g. computer science, engineering, etc.) in 3rd or 4th year and returning to studies in Fall (requirement of grant application).
    • Strong verbal communication & teamwork skills
    • Organization, attention to detail, and time-management skills
    • Excellent customer service & support skills
    • Personally accountable, ability to work independently
    • Valid First-Aid and CPR is desirable (though not required)
    • Current and clear police information check with vulnerable sector is required
    • Available for full-time hours (8:00am to 4:30pm), Monday to Friday from June 23 to August 22, 2025 on-campus.
    • Comfortable with $19/hour wages plus 6% vacation pay
    • Willing to participate in Work Integrated Learning grant application program
