High-Level Overview
Benevity is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the evolution of our Core and Business layers within the Benevity Intelligent Impact Platform. This leadership role is central to our modernization initiative and platform transformation, overseeing the foundational capabilities—including User Identity & Access Management (UIAM), Developer Experience (DevX), and API extensibility—that empower our entire engineering organization. You will ensure that 20+ engineering squads and multiple product lines can rapidly and safely build experiences for a global, multi-tenant client base on a governed, multi-cloud architecture.
By owning the engineering strategy and delivery for these shared services, you will be responsible for reducing developer friction and increasing platform reliability across every product surface. We are looking for a collaborative leader who prioritizes inclusive engineering practices and architectural consistency to enable a diverse community of talent to thrive. Success in this role means championing a scalable, high-velocity environment where foundational excellence drives collective impact for our clients and their communities.
What you'll do:
- Lead diverse engineering teams delivering core UIAM, authentication flows, and shared business services that underpin the entire platform
- Empower engineers by evolving the "paved path" through AI-augmented tools and service templates while using productivity KPIs to reduce cognitive load
- Partner with the Architecture Office to define platform-wide standards and own the API governance model including lifecycle management and automated quality controls
- Accelerate modernization initiatives by refactoring legacy systems and promoting vertical thin-slice delivery to enable rapid product innovation
- Collaborate across Product, Security, and Architecture to balance modernization goals with operational risk reduction and high-quality delivery
- Drive the adoption of service observability, performance engineering, and multi-region readiness to support high-scale multi-tenant workloads
- Champion an AI-first mindset by building AI-integrated development lifecycles and encouraging continuous skill acquisition across the organization
- Maintain rigorous security, audit, and compliance standards like GDPR and SOC2 through proactive risk identification and mitigation planning
- Build sustainable incident response readiness with inclusive pager rotations, clear runbooks, and defined SLAs for foundational services
- Establish high-bar engineering practices focused on SDLC maturity and DevOps ownership to ensure consistent architectural excellence
- Support a diverse group of engineering managers and senior contributors by fostering an inclusive environment of excellence and belonging
What you'll bring:
- Experienced leader capable of navigating complex multi-year transformations and systems retirement while bringing clarity and alignment to high-ambiguity situations
- Empathetic communicator who bridges the gap between executive vision and engineering execution through courage, ownership, and a service-oriented mindset
- Proven track record of managing inclusive organizations of 30–60 people including managers and individual contributors across multiple collaborative squads
- Skilled in balancing long-term platform strategy with immediate delivery needs while championing a healthy DevOps culture of ownership and support
- Deep expertise in platform modernization using domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, and scalable shared business services
- Extensive background leading the design of enterprise-grade identity systems including UIAM, OAuth2, OIDC, and multi-tenant access models
- Dedicated to enhancing developer experience (DevX) and internal productivity for large-scale engineering organizations through API-first ecosystems
- Technical proficiency in multi-cloud environments like AWS or GCP with a focus on high-availability and multi-region deployment patterns
- Experience operating multi-tenant services with strict tenancy isolation, client-level configuration, and predictable scaling characteristics
- Strong background in Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD, and modern service mesh patterns to ensure architectural consistency and reliability
- Mature approach to managing operational excellence, technical debt reduction, and strategic roadmap delivery in a fast-paced environment
