Lead Hardware Engineer
Avidrone Aerospace
About Avidrone Aerospace Inc.
We specialize in designing and manufacturing fully automated uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) that bring new capabilities cargo delivery. Avidrone offers a full end–to–end system that is entirely proprietary, including record–breaking airframe designs and complete control software focusing on heavy lifting and long endurance delivery missions.
About the Role
Avidrone is looking for a Lead Hardware Engineer to join our engineering team on a full–time permanent basis. As our lead electronics designer you will take ownership of all our hardware designs and supervise both new product and sustaining engineering activities. You will execute hardware engineering activities across the product lifecycle, including requirements analysis, schematic design, component selection, prototyping and testing, fabrication, and regulatory certification. As needed you will engage with outside consulting firms to ensure we have the technical skills and capacity to meet our product development goals.
About You
You enjoy a challenge and love solving complex issues. You have a meticulous eye for detail and can participate with a multi–faceted technology team to create all–new inventions and designs. You are flexible and able to react quickly in dynamic environments. You approach all challenges using practical, hands–on trials and solutions. As an added bonus, you are highly interested in things that fly, automation, robotics, radio control hobbies and any past projects in uncrewed systems. You enjoy being part of an entrepreneurial team of like–minded aviation & robotics enthusiasts and will appreciate the great feeling of accomplishment watching your hard work take actual flight.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Be our in–house subject matter expert on hardware designs and technologies that enable our proprietary systems. This includes our autopilot controller, GPS navigation system, battery and power management hardware, motor controllers and servo actuators, wiring harnesses, and a variety of sensors used for navigation and diagnostics.
- Lead the implementation of new hardware designs throughout the product development process. Perform requirements analysis, schematic design, simulations, PCB layout, component selection, EVT/DVT production, and testing.
- Work with component vendors, contract manufacturers, and our broader engineering team to fabricate hardware. Place orders for components and assemblies and ensure the appropriate QC processes and tools are in place both at our CMs and during acceptance at Avidrone.
- Manage sustaining engineering activities. Ensure our bill of materials are up to date, identify and qualify alternate components, modify existing designs as needed (e.g. to improve performance or testability of our products), and assist with RMA investigations as needed.
- Administer contract engineering projects. Identify areas where outside assistance is required (e.g., due to capacity concerns or the need for specialised capabilities), write up the scope of work, select vendors, and ensure delivery of the contract work to our specifications.
- Participate in regulatory activities. Assist in identifying the appropriate regulatory and testing authority(s) where we require regulatory certification for our electronics products, review laboratory testing requirements, generate any requested documentation, customise and make product samples for testing, review results, and modify as needed to ensure compliance.
- Keep all documentation related to your activities up to date. Including technical requirements, CAD files, schematics, BOMs, test records, etc.
What You Bring
You have:
- Degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics engineering, or similar disciplines or equivalent industry experience.
- Approximately 8+ years of experience as a hardware engineer designing microcontroller–based PCBs and systems.
- Led multiple projects through the full hardware development lifecycle, from a blank page to volume production.
- Demonstrated the ability to gather information from multiple stakeholders (product, safety, regulatory) and translate into documented technical requirements.
- Hands–on experience working with lab equipment to bring up and debug new hardware prototypes.
- An understanding of the software development process and experience working with software team(s) to coordinate activities during new product development.
- Designed test plans to verify new product designs against a range of requirements.
Bonus if you have:
- Experience working with component suppliers and CMs to manufacture electronics products.
- Have brought new products to market that have passed regulatory testing such as FCC/IC, cUL, CE, etc.
- Managed contract engineering activities to augment in–house capabilities during new product development.
