The Role
The Team Lead – Industrial Automation & Controls Engineering will manage a team of Engineers and Technologists responsible for developing the Attabotics storage system controls and electrical design to achieve a safe, scalable, sustainable, and commercialized architecture. The team is also responsible for sustaining the current systems, peripherals, and workstation PLC design. The Controls Lead will prioritize and plan the work of the team, including specification, design, configuration, and validation activities. The Team Lead will ensure the technical quality, testability and regulatory compliance of all designs produced by the team.

Who you are

  • Lead and manage the Automation & Controls team comprised of PLC programmers, computer engineers and electrical engineers. Includes planning, coaching, mentoring, and hiring
  • Provide technical direction for the design and development of industrial automation systems for new products and changes to existing designs
  • Be both a leader and hands-on contributor at all levels of design for PLCs, automation, certification, industrial control panels
  • Lead or contribute to related Risk Assessments.
  • Responsible for the detailed review of work generated by team members
  • Review controls and electrical work for functionality, safety, reliability, cost of production, testability, and maintenance/service
  • Work collaboratively with a cross functional team to take design concepts from R&D and make them a functioning, manufacturable, sustainable product.
  • Drive design update and release activities through an Engineering Change process
  • Employ Agile (Scrum, Kanban) tools and practices to manage team backlogs, workflow and deployments.
  • Employ and manage software versioning tools such as GIT or SVN
  • Contribute to department practices, procedures, and engineering best habits

What we need

  • BSc Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics or Automation Engineering, or Computer Science, or a related field
  • 8+ years’ experience in Electrical/Automation design demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
  • Experience leading, coordinating, planning, and mentoring team members
  • Professional Engineer in good standing, as recognized by APEGA, or ability to register as a Professional Engineer shortly after starting position
  • Experience in product development projects, deploying commercial designs into production
  • Expert level knowledge of PLC programming using Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram and Structured Text languages (IEC61131-3)
  • Expert knowledge of PLC hardware design and validation, PLC programming, Control panel layout & design, Low voltage power distribution systems
  • Expert ability to read and develop site and panel electrical schematics
  • Knowledge and experience working with industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.
  • Experience with Beckhoff TwinCAT and ADS is preferred
  • Ideally has experience in designing to, and obtaining field/type certifications through an NRTL such as UL/CSA/TUV
  • Working knowledge of applicable machine safety codes and standards is preferred (eg. ISO13849)
  • Experience with industrial machine design or configurable product design and specification, is an asset
  • Experience with Agile project management and development processes, including CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous development)
  • Experience with software version control repositories eg GIT, SVN
