Your Contribution to Our Growth

As Technical Lead, Back Office, you will play a critical role in shaping the systems that power Aquanow’s core financial infrastructure. You will lead the development of platforms that underpin key workflows such as settlements, treasury operations, asset movements, and integrations with banks and custodians.

This is a high-impact role combining technical leadership, people management, and hands-on engineering. You will manage and mentor a team of 4 developers, while remaining actively involved in coding, code reviews, system design, and architecture decisions. This is not a purely managerial role. You will be expected to lead from the front and stay close to the technology.

You will partner closely with Product, Operations, and Infrastructure teams to design and deliver scalable backend services that support a growing global business. This includes contributing to major initiatives such as building new settlement capabilities and enhancing systems that connect to external financial partners.

Beyond technical execution, you will play a key role in navigating competing priorities, challenging assumptions, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality solutions in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

This is a Full-Time, Permanent position working Hybrid either out of our Downtown Vancouver or Downtown Toronto office.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of Aquanow’s Back Office platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Own the technical direction of the team and services which are written in JavaScript, TypeScript/Node.js, and Java.
  • Drive the build-out of new backend services, including a next-generation settlement service.
  • Lead the evolution of our internal platform, improving how we integrate with external banks, custodians, and financial partners via APIs.
  • Oversee and contribute to backend development (primarily Java, with existing TypeScript systems), including code reviews and hands-on contributions.
  • Manage and mentor a team of engineers, including performance management, 1:1s, and career development.
  • Partner closely with Product, Operations, and Infrastructure teams to deliver high-impact solutions across multiple business-critical services.
  • Navigate and resolve conflicts across stakeholders, particularly around timelines, scope, and technical feasibility.
  • Ensure systems meet compliance, security, and risk requirements within a financial services environment.
  • Contribute to architecture and design decisions, working alongside internal architecture and infrastructure teams.

We’d Love to See

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of backend software development experience along with design/architecture.
  • Deep knowledge and hands on experience coding with JavaScript, Typescript/Node.js, and Java.
  • Proven experience operating as a Tech Lead or senior technical owner of complex systems.
  • Experience managing and mentoring an engineering team (1 on 1’s, reviews, performance conversations, etc.).
  • Experience building and scaling financial systems, ideally in back office domains such as settlements, treasury, position keeping, or fund operations.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience integrating with external financial institutions, banks, or custodians via APIs.
  • Familiarity with messaging systems such as Kafka or Solace.
  • Experience working with cloud environments (AWS) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Knowledge of financial instruments including equities, bonds, derivatives, and crypto assets is a plus.
  • Experience with high-frequency, low-latency trading systems is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in high-pressure environments and push back constructively when needed.

These are not strict requirements to thrive in this role. We believe that people can learn and understand technologies if they are willing. We encourage you to still apply if some of the requirements are missing or lacking.

At our offices you will find a group of people that embrace diversity and value performance over pedigree. Every day we draw value from the diverse experiences of our team whose backgrounds include top financial institutions, tech companies, and non-traditional backgrounds. Our success comes from identifying exceptional people and providing them with the platform to reach their true potential.
