The Opportunity:

The Associate Director, Government Relations and Innovation will build exceptional relationship management skills, policy proposal experience, communication and problem-solving skills to work within the Office of the CEO. You will focus on developing and managing Canadian and international government relationships, technical writing (including proposals and policies), jurisdictional scanning, research and data analytics, interfacing with internal and external stakeholders, and identifying opportunities to deepen existing sectoral and business relationships.


This position can be based anywhere in Canada but ideally Ottawa, given the extensive facetime required with the federal government.

What you’ll be doing everyday:

  • Leverage your understanding of, and existing network within Canadian federal and provincial governments to build high quality relationships.

  • Be an ApplyBoard brand ambassador, to tell our story to governments, and build rapport to embed our organization as a valued stakeholder and contributor to government initiatives

  • Build an understanding of international government functions and priorities, especially in the largest source markets for international students, with a goal of building similar relationships as currently exist in Canada

  • Build and deepen partnerships with post-secondary education sector stakeholders

  • Cross-jurisdictional scanning and reporting

  • Develop high quality proposals, RFP qualification documents, presentations and research

  • Identify, build, leverage and win new opportunities to drive enhanced stakeholder benefit

  • Present and share knowledge on developments and trends gained through media scanning and events

  • Drive sector thought leadership

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of ApplyBoard's business & priorities, and how they intersect with and support sector and government priorities

  • Independently drive and manage initiatives attuned to timelines and competing priorities

  • Act as point-person on government reporting with respect to the Lobbying Act and other regulations with which ApplyBoard is required to comply


What you bring to the table:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in business, economics, management or a related discipline; master’s degree or MBA is beneficial

  • 5+ years of Government Relations experience and/or experience working with the Canadian PSE sector

  • Experience in government and/or existing relationships with government

  • Outgoing personality that thrives on building relationships that are meaningful and beneficial to both parties

  • Strong writer, both in technical proposal writing and policy; policy and advocacy work experience is an asset

  • Strong research and analytics experience

  • Skilled at building an understanding of government priorities from legislative and media monitoring

  • Experience working with and building a government relations strategy in support of organizational strategies

  • A natural curiosity, entrepreneurial mindset, and enthusiasm for building solutions to longstanding problems.

  • Track record of successful large proposals in response to Canadian federal government RFPs

  • Bilingual (French/English) is an asset

  • Regular travel is required between Ottawa, Toronto and Kitchener (HQ). If based in Ottawa, less travel would be required.
