Role Summary
The Application Engineer II is responsible for leveraging engineering domain knowledge and expertise to assist customers in solving complex engineering problems using Ansys Zemax OpticStudio software. This role focuses primarily on pre-sales activities but also involves providing technical support. The engineer will support regional & global accounts to significantly impact software revenue, offering technical solutions, conducting demonstrations, and delivering training sessions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Technical Support & Pre-Sales Demonstrations: Apply advanced engineering expertise and knowledge of optics, especially with Ansys Zemax OpticStudio, to provide the highest level of technical support and pre-sales demonstrations to customers and Channel Partners.
- Customer Engagement: Own customer problems, proactively engaging with selected accounts to provide comprehensive solutions. Work independently throughout the sales opportunity lifecycle, understanding customers' business needs and engineering design workflows.
- Training and Professional Services: Conduct introductory, intermediate, and advanced training classes. Scope and deliver professional services for projects, potentially collaborating with other field engineers.
- Product Improvement and Development: Gather customer requirements and trends to support the improvement of Ansys Zemax OpticStudio. Collaborate with the Ansys product development teams to translate customer needs into new product capabilities, testing new releases on industrial problems.
- Internal Initiatives and Knowledge Sharing: Participate in internal initiatives to share knowledge and create best practices. Develop simulation best practices, solutions, and FAQs for the knowledge base.
Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience
- Education: Bachelor's, Master’s, or PhD in Physics/Optical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience:
- For Bachelor's degree: 5 years of professional experience in a relevant engineering domain.
- For Master’s degree: 3-5 years of professional experience in a relevant engineering domain.
- Candidates with less experience may be considered for junior positions.
- Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Optical Design for Imaging applications
- In-depth use of Ansys software or other commercial optics software packages.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to conduct webinars and presentations.
- Demonstrated skills in writing and presenting in English.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects.
- Travel: Ability to travel up to 30% of the time.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Experience:
- 5 years of professional experience in a relevant engineering domain for Bachelor’s degree holders.
- 3 years of professional experience in a relevant engineering domain for Master’s degree holders.
- Hands-on experience using Ansys Zemax OpticStudio or Synopsys CodeV.
- Demonstrated experience with modelling optical systems and strong knowledge of optical theory.
- Experience in a customer-facing technical support or consulting role.
- Technical Skills:
- Familiarity with Python and MATLAB.
- Soft Skills:
- Ability to interact effectively with senior business and engineering managers and/or C-level executives.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with a sense of urgency.
