Summary / Role Purpose

As part of a publicly funded project with strong industrial and university partners, processes, methodologies, and models are being developed for the digital product development and validation of active vulnerable road user (VRU) scenarios. Active means considering and evaluating muscle-driven movements of a human body model (HBM). To this end, it is necessary to bring extended muscle models into application and to make human models suitable for the simulation of such muscle-driven movements. Representative VRU scenarios including movement patterns and criteria for load and injury prediction also need to be developed. Building on past joint activities, a close exchange and direct cooperation between the research partners is planned to support the success of the project.

The PhD Student - R&D Engineer (m/w/d) is responsible for the development of an active muscle modeling approach. This task includes the support of the muscle material model development and its implementation to the LS-DYNA solver as well as its demonstration and verification in our LS-DYNA human body model Hans.

The position is full-time, limited to 3 years and onsite at our Stuttgart office.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Active research (online/literature/patents) and collaboration with the project partners

  • Implementation and support of active muscle models in an FE human model (HBM)

  • Development of simulation models for the verification and validation of sub-models as well as the entire HBM with regard to kinematics, load and injury prediction

  • Development of specific pre- and post-processing functionalities for active HBMs

  • Summarizing statements on different aspects of the HBM developed in the project, e.g. biofidelity, performance, prediction quality, efficiency

  • Preparation of documentation and presentation of the results

Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • Excellent university degree (Master) in engineering or sports science with theoretical background in mechanics, FEM, human modeling and biomechanics

  • Good programming skills (e.g. Python, Fortran, C, …)

  • Proficient in written and spoken English

  • Confident handling of MS Office tools

  • Structured and analytical way of working, team and communication skills, reliability

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience with commonly used CAE solvers in the automotive industry as well as pre- and post-processing tools (e.g. LS-DYNA, Primer, ANSA, Animator)

  • German language proficiency is an advantage
